For the fifth time in its history, Barcelona achieved the national treble this Saturday by lifting the Copa de la Reina against Atlético after having won the Supercopa in January and the League in April. The blaugrana team still has next week the big Champions League match against OL Lyonnes to crown a season that will be perfect or nearly perfect depending on whether they achieve a quadruple that they only lifted in 2024. The goals from Pina, Brugts, and Salma in the first part culminated Barça’s indisputable and extraordinary superiority at the Gran Canaria Stadium, which recorded 26,093 spectators, a record in a women’s cup final.

With the Champions League battle in seven days, Pere Romeu rested Paredes and chose the young and powerful Aïcha to accompany Mapi in the center of defense. Aitana, recently recovered from the fibula injury that kept her out for five months, started on the bench, and it was Patri, Alexia, and Vicky who formed the midfield, with Salma, Pina, and Pajor up front. José Herrera did not pull any rabbits out of the hat: he started with his usual 5-3-2, with Alexia Fernández and Medina on the wings and Fiamma, Natalia, and Bøe Risa to work the midfield.
The red-and-white coach’s idea was to close the interior lanes through which Barça usually causes damage and then launch Amaiur and Jensen on the wings. The plan worked exactly 23 minutes, during which Herrera’s group resisted the blaugrana onslaughts and also unleashed two counterattacks. Mapi corrected Jensen’s run when she was about to face Cata, and Alexia Fernández’s cross for Amaiur went long on the second. Atlético’s offensive production was stifled in those two counters while the team struggled in front of their area to interrupt Barcelona’s connections, ordered from Patri’s ability to give criteria to the attacks.
Pere Romeu’s team is so dominant that it always sinks its rivals so much that at many moments it leaves an overwhelming sense of superiority, as if its players were playing a different sport. Barça’s combinations were enhanced in the final meters by Vicky and Salma, very sharp in one-on-ones. A combination of theirs on the left side ended with the ball on the right for Pina to test Lola, who was agile in the save. The goalkeeper saw a header from Salma go over before Pina, the forward who last year defeated Atlético in the cup final with a double, scored on a loose ball she caught in the area. The player from Montcada i Reixac once again demonstrated her shooting ability when she placed the ball through the only gap at the far post that the goalkeeper could not reach.
The goal had an exciting effect on Barça, which even wove faster and with more confidence while Atlético turned pale, unable to respond to the team that best hides possession from its rival in the game of spaces and that this season had already overwhelmed them with a 0-6 and a 5-0 in the two league encounters. Vicky assisted Brugts for the fullback to head the second, and Salma scored the third just before halftime after a corner where Fiamma mishandled control and allowed the forward to finish comfortably in front of Lola.

Barcelona did not lower the pace one bit despite the 3-0 at halftime. After the break, they bombarded Lola’s goal and created three clear chances in three minutes. Patri and Ona hit the crossbar with their shots, while Lola shone with a header save from Pajor. Amid Barça’s attacks, Bøe Risa struck the ball from the edge of the area. The shot was very powerful and went into the top right corner of Cata’s goal, who until then had only had to save a long-range shot.
The goal did not change the match script, even though Herrera refreshed the squad with Gio, Luany, Bartel, Otermín, and Chinchilla. Romeu rested Alexia and gave playing time to Kika, Serrajordi, Aitana, Torrejón, and Schertenleib. The score was not more lopsided because Lola, the player with the most matches in Atlético’s history, frustrated Pajor. Barcelona, an era-defining team with 19 titles out of 21 won in Spain since 2020, lifted their twelfth Cup without any member of the royal family in Las Palmas to award the trophy.
