British Finlay Tarling, a 19-year-old cyclist from the NSN Development Team, died this Friday in an accident while participating in the eighth stage of the Vuelta a Portugal, according to the race organization.

In a note published on their social media, the organizers indicated that Tarling’s death occurred after “a serious accident,” while the channel broadcasting the competition, the Portuguese channel RTP, stated that it was due to a head-on collision with a vehicle unrelated to the race that was traveling in the opposite direction.

The organization of the 87th Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta Jogos Santa Casa deeply regrets to inform the death of British rider Finlay Tarling, from the NSN Development Team, following a serious accident that occurred during the 8th stage of the race.

Due to the incident, the stage was suspended with about 20 kilometers remaining, and according to the organization, “as a sign of respect and mourning, the podium ceremony will not be held.”
The President of Portugal, António José Seguro, also lamented the event and, in a statement, expressed his “deep sorrow for the tragic death” of the Welsh cyclist. Finlay Tarling, born on October 2, 2006, joined the NSN youth system in 2025, when the Swiss team was then called Israel-Premier Tech. The Volta a Portugal was the first major race of his career and, throughout the race, he stood out in the two time trial stages, with an eleventh place in the prologue and fifteenth in the fifth stage. Finlay was the younger brother of Josh Tarling, who races for the Netcompany INEOS team.
