Civil Protection of the Generalitat has made a call this Saturday to take extreme precautions in bathing areas, since, halfway through the summer season, there are already 29 deaths and 55 injuries and more than 2,000 calls to 112 reporting incidents on beaches, swimming pools, or inland waters. The Department of Health has also joined this call for responsibility and caution, especially with children and the elderly, after noting that high temperatures are leading more bathers to the beaches and more accidents are being recorded. Emergency services recommend swimming only in permitted places and preferably in areas with lifeguard service.
According to Civil Protection data, 15 of the 29 fatalities since the start of the season on June 15 have died on the beaches; 9 in swimming pools and 5 in inland waters, whereas last year at this time there were 22 deaths and 33 injuries. While the beaches register the highest number of fatalities, swimming pools accumulate a higher number of injuries, especially among minors.
Incidents in bathing areas have caused the emergency phone 112 to receive 2,044 calls related to 1,310 accidents since the start of the season. Of all emergency services, the health service has concentrated most of the activity, with 1,147 calls related to 797 incidents, followed by 657 calls for 338 risk episodes related to the state of the sea. Of the 15 people who died on the beaches, 12 were men and 3 women. By age, three were minors; four were between 18 and 64 years old and 9 were over 65 years old. Among the injured, four were critical; two serious and 16 less serious, and by age nine of the 22 were over 75 years old.

In swimming pools, nine people have drowned and 30 have been injured and had to be rescued from the water. Six of the fatalities were men and three women and, by age, two were minors; two were between 18 and 64 years old and five were over 65. Five of the injured were critical; 3 serious and 20 less serious, and 17 of the 30 counted in total were minors. In inland waters, five people have lost their lives and a 17-year-old girl was rescued injured from the water.
