The University of Granada, where the young woman murdered in Mexico early this morning was studying Early Childhood Education, was quick to express its “firm rejection and absolute condemnation” of the terrible incident involving the 21-year-old Claudia Tacoronte Aguilera. The student, originally from the Canary Islands, was in her fourth year and was undertaking an academic mobility stay at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM) and, according to initial reports, was attacked in the municipality of Cuautla (Mexico), on the outskirts of the local Casa de la Cultura.
“The university community wishes to extend its deepest condolences, solidarity, and affection to the family, close persons, and Claudia’s classmates in these moments of profound sorrow,” the academic institution wrote in a statement. “As a public institution committed to the transfer of knowledge, the defense of human rights, and the development of critical thinking, the University of Granada reiterates the imperative need to eradicate all forms of violence against women,” it insisted.

The University of Granada’s governing team has explained that it has made itself available to the Spanish consular authorities in Mexico, as well as to the young woman’s family, “to provide all necessary support at this time.”
Additionally, the University has called for a minute of silence in memory of the young woman this Monday at 11 a.m., at the entrance of all University of Granada workplaces.

According to a statement issued this Sunday by the Mexican Institute of Traditional Medicines Tlahuilli A.C., Claudia was participating in the XLII National Festival of the Medicinal Plant, held from September 12 to 14 in Cuautla. The statement says verbatim that “Claudia came to this event with the desire to learn, socialize, and be part of a community gathered around knowledge, medicinal plants, health, and collective care. Her life was violently taken during her stay in our city. We express our deepest solidarity with her mother, father, family, friends, classmates, as well as with the university communities of Mexico and Spain who today face this loss.”
Following Claudia’s murder, the statement continues, “the community gathered at the Festival modified its activities and opened a collective space for mourning and remembrance. Around the Tlalmanalli, our offering, we pronounced Claudia’s name, lit candles, and shared words and silence to accompany her and ourselves. Claudia was here. She was part of our community during these days. Her name and memory remain with us.”
The organization assures that “from the moment the events occurred, members of the Institute remained present and have collaborated with the corresponding authorities. We will continue providing all information required to contribute to clarifying what happened. We demand from the authorities a prompt, thorough, responsible investigation with a gender perspective, which allows full clarification of the facts, determination of responsibilities, and guarantees justice for Claudia.”
The Consulate General of Spain in Mexico City is closely monitoring the young woman’s murder in the country’s center and is in contact with her family. This has been confirmed by sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to Efe, who indicated that the Consulate maintains constant communication with the Mexican judicial authorities working to clarify the circumstances of her murder.
