The Government of the Maldives reported this Monday that the bodies of four Italian divers who had been missing since the end of last week had been located. The tragedy occurred while they, along with a fifth companion, the only member of the expedition found so far, were diving in the Indian Ocean. On Saturday, the body of a member of the Maldivian army, Mohammed Mahudhee, one of the rescuers participating in the search for the missing divers, was recovered. The group had descended into a dangerous underwater cave in the Alimathà area, where they became trapped for reasons still unknown.

The five Italian divers were very experienced and were participating in a scientific dive in the Thinwana Kandu cave, known as the Shark Cave, in the Vaavu atoll, also called Felidhoo. “They were collecting data, they were not on vacation,” said one of their companions, who assured that the weather conditions were good on the day of the incident. It was a trip organized every year for Italian marine scientists. On Saturday, the local press reported that the dive was conducted at a depth below the legal limit authorized for diving in the Asian country, which is 30 meters.

The Maldivian government spokesperson confirmed to the BBC that new dives will be carried out “in the coming days” to recover the bodies.
