Guillermo Billy Álvarez, former president of Cruz Azul, died this morning, sources from the company confirmed to EL PAÍS. Álvarez was 80 years old and was imprisoned in the Altiplano prison, where he was awaiting several trials related to his decades as director of the La Cruz Azul Cooperative. The businessman from Hidalgo led the company for more than 35 years and was in charge of the football team of the same name, being both one of the most recognizable faces in Mexican football and the image of the cement company’s expansion into other businesses such as hospitality or financial services. He was arrested in January 2025, accused of organized crime, money laundering, fraudulent administration, and tax fraud.
