Summer begins to appear on television. The amount of television production released at this time of year is less than at other times, but platforms have learned to save some standout premieres for these weeks and thus take advantage of viewers’ increased free time and less television competition. A summer classic that returns punctually to its appointment is The Bear, this time for its definitive farewell. The Targaryens also return with the third season of House of the Dragon. And among the most notable premieres, a television version of Cape Fear, with Javier Bardem as the villain who was played by Robert De Niro in the film.

Cape Fear

A strange confession leads Max Cady to be released from prison after serving more than a decade accused of murder. The couple formed by his former lawyer and the prosecutor who put him in jail fears he seeks revenge. Shortly after Cady is released, the peaceful kingdom in which the couple and their two children live will begin to crack with the constant threatening presence of the ex-convict. Cape Fear, the film directed by Martin Scorsese in 1991 and produced by Steven Spielberg, and starring Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck in 1962, becomes a 10-episode series with a star-studded cast in which Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson play the lawyers and Javier Bardem takes on the iconic role that Robert De Niro made of the unsettling Max Cady (previously portrayed by Mitchum). A story with an atmosphere between suspense and horror and an aesthetic strongly connected to its origins.

33 Days

Carles Porta, a prolific investigative journalist specializing in true crime documentaries, moves to fiction with a story based on real events. The Brito and Picatoste case, the escape of two prisoners in 2001, serves as inspiration for this series starring actors José Manuel Poga and Julián Villagrán. Over 33 days, two prisoners keep the entire Catalonia Autonomous Police on edge while hiding in the mountains. The series not only recreates the escape but also focuses on the Mossos investigation team, a police force still being questioned by other institutions.

Alice and Steve

A genre that has yielded great results on television is anti-romantic comedy, which takes the molds of the traditional story that begins with “boy meets girl” and turns them around with good doses of cynicism and irony. This British comedy, which triumphed at Canneseries with three awards, including best series, falls into that trend. The friendship between Alice and Steve shatters when he starts dating the 26-year-old daughter of his best friend. Alice will do everything possible to end the relationship, but Steve will resist, and what was a perfect friendship will turn into a deadly enmity. Nicola Walker and Jemaine Clement star in the six-episode series.

The Other Bennet Sister

Elizabeth Bennet, the protagonist of Pride and Prejudice, had four other sisters. One of the least present in Jane Austen’s novel, and the one that has received the least attention from readers and critics, is Mary Bennet, the middle sister. That slight is resolved in this romantic dramedy, based on a novel by Janice Hadlow, where Mary Bennet goes from observer to protagonist. In Regency England, the sister who remains in the shadows questions the role society imposes on her. In her search for emotional independence, she will discover love and the importance of choosing herself. For Jane Austen lovers, obviously.

House of the Dragon

The great battle that has been announced for two seasons will take place in the third installment of the Game of Thrones prequel. According to Ryan Condal, co-creator of the series, the episode that includes the Battle of the Gullet, which will start the season, will be one of the “craziest ever made on television.” The Dance of the Dragons, that is, the civil war unleashed within the very disorganized Targaryen family, will continue to be the center of the series starring Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke, set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. It already has a fourth season confirmed, which will premiere in 2028.
When and where to watch it? From Monday the 22nd, on HBO Max.
The Bear

The fifth season of the least comedic comedy of the moment, which follows the stressful life of restaurant workers as they deal with anxiety, pressure, and grief, will be the end for a series that was already begging to finish. After the episode that recounted a past trip of Richie and Mikey, the story resumes where the fourth season left off, when Carmy decided to leave the restaurant business and leave the place in the hands of Sydney, Richie, and Natalie. The new partners will have to join forces to keep the place going while the threat of a possible sale remains and they try to achieve the coveted Michelin star.

Millennial Mal

Lorena Iglesias is the creator and star of this comedy in which a 42-year-old librarian mistakenly receives a scholarship to study at university. Taking advantage of being unemployed, she decides to accept, but it is a scholarship for those under 30, so she will have to pretend to belong to a generation far from her. To do this, she will undergo a makeover and learn to speak and behave like twenty-somethings. Filmin’s new bet on national fiction is a peculiar proposal about generational clash with a succession of situations that exploit secondhand embarrassment and discomfort and delve into the fear of not feeling accepted.
