With the arrival of September, platforms are slowly regaining the pace of series premieres. In our selection this month, there are many British titles of different genres: thriller, drama, comedy… American Horror Story also returns with a 13th season that will bring together the great characters of the series. And Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s novel The Final Problem becomes a miniseries.

Also, there will be a double dose of Guy Ritchie with the second seasons of the criminal thrillers The Gentlemen, created by him (on the 3rd on Netflix), and Mobland, in which he directs Pierce Brosnan, Tom Hardy, and Helen Mirren (on the 21st on SkyShowtime). A school for thieves is the setting of Crookhaven (on the 7th on Syfy), and a dystopian Berlin provides the backdrop for the vampire drama City of Blood (on the 16th on Disney+). Additionally, several classic procedurals premiere new seasons. For Chicago Fire, it will be its 14th year in Spain (on the 9th on AXN); Law & Order: Organized Crime is in its fifth season (on the 22nd on Calle 13); and joining them is the premiere of NCIS: Sydney (on the 15th on Warner TV).
Elizabeth Banks and Matthew Macfadyen play a couple in crisis put to the test when he accidentally shrinks her in The Shrink Wife (on the 9th on Movistar Plus). In Open Case (on the 9th on Apple TV), a detective becomes obsessed with finding his daughter who disappeared a decade ago. Private investigator Frances Neagley is the protagonist of the spin-off series from Reacher titled Neagley (on the 16th on Amazon Prime Video). Sharon Horgan is the creator and star of Youth (on the 21st on HBO Max), a comedy about the search for love and sex by a 50-year-old woman. A group of twenty-something friends are the protagonists of the comedy Adults, whose second season has received very good reviews (on the 30th on Disney+). Also favored by critics is Slow Horses, returning with its sixth season (September 16 on Apple TV). And in the Spanish series Adrift (on the 20th on Atresplayer), the return of several fishermen who disappeared in a shipwreck will turn their families’ lives upside down.
From this month’s premieres and returns (which you can check in our calendar), we recommend giving this selection a chance.
Gone
David Morrissey plays a stoic headmaster of a prestigious private school who reports the disappearance of his wife. The pragmatic detective who takes on the case, played by Eve Myles, is puzzled by the man’s unsettling attitude, who does not seem willing to cooperate with the police and becomes a possible suspect. This is the starting point of a cat-and-mouse game that develops into a psychological thriller whose plot gradually gains intensity and tension.

Believe Us
Last spring, this four-episode legal drama based on true events aired in the UK, a true crime that, in the vein of The Sambre Case, has the virtue of focusing on the victims rather than centering the story on the perpetrator. The story follows some of the 12 women who reported being drugged and sexually assaulted by John Worboys, known as “the black cab rapist” (suspected of committing over a hundred rapes), and who fought to achieve justice on their own against the apparent disinterest of the police and judicial system.
When and where to watch? Thursday the 3rd, on Movistar Plus.
A Tale of Two Cities
The very famous novel by Charles Dickens set in bustling London and Paris during the French Revolution becomes a four-episode miniseries in this BBC and MGM+ co-production. Lucie Manette’s life is turned upside down when she receives a message from Paris saying that her father, whom she believed dead for almost 20 years, might be alive. The messenger is the French Charles Darnay, who is arrested and accused of treason. An unstable lawyer, Sydney Carton, will help in his defense. From here arises a love triangle in which both men will fight to be worthy of the young woman’s love. Kit Harington, Mirren Mack, and François Civil portray Sydney Carton, Lucie Manette, and Charles Darnay in this striking period drama.
When and where to watch? Sunday the 6th, on MGM+.
Babies
Another British production that has received great praise is this drama about a couple in their thirties, played by Paapa Essiedu and Siobhán Cullen, trying to move forward after suffering multiple miscarriages. Their bond allows them to find humor and hope amid the pain. The plot also follows another couple testing their compatibility alongside the protagonists’ process. The Guardian described the series as “a haunting, funny, moving, and emotionally devastating television triumph.”
When and where to watch? Tuesday the 8th, on Filmin.
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story
The anthology created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan focused on great historical killers started off strong with Dahmer, a critical and public success; followed by the Menéndez brothers and then Ed Gein. Now it’s the turn of the first woman in the group, Lizzie Borden. In August 1892, Andrew Borden and his wife Abby were axed to death in their own home. The main suspect was the former’s daughter, who was ultimately acquitted by the jury. The case was never solved. Her story became part of American popular culture. Each installment of this series has had a different style and approach, and it is still unknown from which perspective this case will be addressed.

Such Brave Girls
Critics adore this British comedy whose second season, released a year ago, now arrives in Spain. The plot follows the lives of two sisters living with their mother, dealing, thanks to a very particular humor, with a complicated life situation and mental health issues. The result is one of the most daring, cheeky, and sometimes even disconcerting comedies of the moment. It is not afraid to push the boundaries of humor, and that is always something to be appreciated.
When and where to watch? Tuesday the 22nd, on Filmin.
Brothers
What if two Hollywood stars, friends after starring in a popular TV series, discovered in their maturity that they are actually biological brothers? Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson shared in a podcast in 2023 the starting point of the comedy they now star in. That theory, that McConaughey’s mother might have had an intimate encounter with Harrelson’s father resulting in the former, grew and became an urban legend that the actors themselves have fueled and that has been the best promotional campaign for this comedy in which they play fictional versions of themselves. As the series itself says, it is “based on a true rumor.”

The Final Problem
Basil, a retired actor famous for having played Sherlock Holmes in several films, finds himself at the center of a case that could well be one of those solved by the famous fictional detective. It is spring 1959, and a group of people is isolated in a hotel on an islet near Mallorca. An English tourist is found dead in what appears to be a suicide, but they soon realize there is more behind it. Basil will take on the role he has often played in his work to try to unravel what is happening. Jose Coronado, María Valverde, and Martiño Rivas star in the four-episode miniseries adapting Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s novel.
When and where to watch? Friday the 25th, on Netflix.
American Horror Story
The 13th edition of the iconic horror series created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk will not be just another installment. Across its 13 half-hour episodes, some of the most well-known characters from the anthology will appear, from Constance Langdon (Jessica Lange) to Cordelia Goode (Sarah Paulson), including Madison Montgomery (Emma Roberts), Marie Laveau (Angela Bassett), Kai Anderson (Evan Peters), Rubber Man, and Twisty the Clown. It is still a mystery how they will manage to include such diverse characters from different seasons and universes, but anything can be expected from this series.
When and where to watch? The first three episodes premiere on September 25 on Disney+, and the season will end the day before Halloween.
