The 2025/2026 NBA season championship is days away from finding its rightful winner. After conference finals where the San Antonio Spurs dramatically defeated the reigning champion, Oklahoma City Thunder, and the New York Knicks comfortably swept the Cleveland Cavaliers, both teams are set to prove who will prevail in the final postseason series to lift the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
The background of this final is quite striking. In the Western Conference, the San Antonio Spurs prevented Oklahoma City Thunder from winning a second consecutive championship, in a tight series that extended to the seventh game and was decided by a margin of just a single digit. In this way, the team led by Victor Wembanyama extended the league’s “curse”: no franchise has been able to repeat as champions in the last eight years, which prevents talking about a dominant dynasty in today’s NBA.
On the other hand, the Knicks had not reached a final since 1999, the year in which, interestingly, they faced and lost to the Spurs: their last championship dates back to 1973. Now, 27 years later, they have found the opportunity to redeem themselves in front of their fans and win the third title in their history, with a streak of 11 consecutive postseason wins and after sweeping the Cavaliers 4-0 in the Eastern Conference final.
In this last challenge of the season, Jalen Brunson’s team will seek to defeat the young Frenchman Victor Wembanyama, who at 22 years old and 2.24 meters tall, holds the title of most valuable player (MVP) in the Western Conference and is poised to become the new face of the NBA. The last time both teams faced each other, on March 1 in the regular season, the Knicks took a convincing victory with a final score of 114-89, interrupting an 11-win streak by the Spurs.

Dates and times of the games in Mexico
For this series, which will be won by the team that prevails in four games out of a maximum of seven, the Spurs start with an advantage that could slightly tip the balance in their favor: four of those seven games would be played —if necessary— at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas, and three at Madison Square Garden in New York. The first two games will take place at the Spurs’ home venue. This is because the Texas team finished the regular season with a better record (62-20) compared to the Knicks (53-29).
