A 21-year-old man has drowned in an irrigation canal in the Ebro Delta, as it passes through Amposta (Montsià). The victim reportedly jumped into the water yesterday before midnight and was swept away by the current. Around 4:03 AM, the young man’s lifeless body was located about 7.5 kilometers downstream from the last sighting point.

According to sources from Amposta City Council and the Generalitat Firefighters, the accident alert was received at 11:44 PM this Friday. It was reported that a person had jumped from the Pont de Pedra of the canal and had not managed to get out of the water. The Firefighters activated 14 units with 31 firefighters and organized a search operation along the canal, downstream. Initially, they conducted an extensive search up to Illa de Buda and later focused on points of the canal where they believed there was a higher chance of finding the missing young man.
Firefighter units from the l’Ametlla de Mar, Tortosa, Amposta, and Ulldecona parks participated in the search tasks, in addition to a sanitary unit with a nurse from the Medical Emergency System (SEM) from the Cambrils park. The GRAE Underwater group and the drone team from the Aerial Means Unit were also activated.

The Mossos d’Esquadra have taken charge of the investigation of the case, and the Amposta City Council has publicly expressed its condolences for the young man’s death.
