Best waterproof backpack
Rain can surprise us at any time and place, whether leaving the office, going to the gym, or hiking. Of course, when there is a rain warning, the ideal is to carry a good umbrella. But the best way to prevent our belongings from getting wet is with a waterproof backpack. The options on the market are very varied, so at EL PAÍS Escaparate we have tested four models to choose the best.

Which waterproof backpacks have we chosen?
The different waterproof backpacks available on the market have many differences beyond design. That is why for this comparison we focused on models of different materials and capacities. We also considered the type of closure and the manufacturing of their seams to choose at least one that was different from the others in both aspects. With these characteristics in mind, the four selected brands are: Origem, Travelite, Lekeinchi, and Skysper.
Why can you trust me?
I am a journalist specialized in product analysis and, in recent years, I have tested and compared dozens of devices and accessories for media like El País. My way of evaluating starts from something very specific: understanding what a product really offers in relation to its cost. Not only in punctual tests but also in everyday use, because that is where the details that make the difference are perceived. Beyond the specifications, I am interested in how it performs in practice, how consistent it is over time, and what limitations appear when you integrate it into your routine. Because, in the end, a good product is not the flashiest, but the one that best justifies its price day by day. That is the criterion with which I build each recommendation.
What is the best waterproof backpack?
All aspects of the Origem backpack have pleased me a lot. It is completely waterproof, but it is also comfortable, spacious, versatile, and foldable. Therefore, I consider it the most complete model in this comparison.

Is it water-resistant?
Being made of PVC 500D mesh fabric, the Origem backpack is completely waterproof. I was able to verify this during the tests, as no water entered the internal compartments. The best part is that after being exposed to water, I also noticed that all its fabrics dry very quickly.
The other aspect that convinced me about this backpack is the security it gave me. It is true that the zippers are not hidden or specially protected, but that does not mean they allow water to pass when properly closed. Added to this is its roll-top closure system, which improves its waterproof effectiveness and keeps belongings well protected.
Inside, the backpack has enough compartments of different sizes to organize all items. It also includes a 14-inch sleeve perfect for carrying a laptop, but it can also be used to put clothes or other personal items. Certainly, any of these compartments can safely store a mobile phone.
The last positive point of this backpack is that I found it very comfortable. First, because its straps are padded to avoid shoulder fatigue. Similarly, the back has four large pads that not only prevent lower back pain but also facilitate air circulation to avoid sweat buildup. Finally, it is very practical that it has handles and a chest strap system for greater ergonomics.
Why do we recommend it?
- Prevents water entry.
- Roll-top closure system and secure zippers.
- Compartments for all items.
- Ergonomic back and straps, with handles and chest strap.
To improve:
- Does not stand upright when empty.
Other alternatives to the best waterproof backpack
Travelite waterproof travel backpack
Regarding its function to prevent water entry, the Travelite waterproof backpack meets expectations very well. However, it does not have a chest strap system, so its usage possibilities are limited to the city.

Is it water-resistant?
The Travelite waterproof backpack responded perfectly to the water resistance tests I conducted. Its polyester fabric prevents water entry as does the zipper on the front pocket. And for greater assurance, it has a roll-top closure system that increases its waterproofing.
Regarding comfort, it is undoubtedly a very complete backpack. In this area, it has padded straps as well as the entire back area, which is made of breathable material to avoid sweat buildup. However, in this regard, I must say that unlike the winning model, it does not have a chest strap, so I do not consider it the best option for long walks.
It should also be noted that its capacity (19 liters) is less than the winning model. Nevertheless, inside it has a good number of compartments to organize all belongings, including a space for carrying a laptop. In fact, I especially liked that it has a zippered pocket on the back to carry a wallet or phone more securely.
Why do we recommend it?
- It is completely waterproof.
- Has padded back and straps.
- Has compartments for all belongings.
To improve:
- Has less capacity.
- Does not have chest strap.
Lekeinchi roll-top waterproof backpack
As with the previous model, the Lekeinchi waterproof backpack works very well to keep belongings dry on rainy days. The problem is that it also lacks a chest strap and, on top of that, has less capacity than the winning model.

Is it water-resistant?
To keep belongings safe from rain, the Lekeinchi waterproof backpack fulfills the goal wonderfully. Both its polyurethane fabric and its zippers are completely water-resistant, so there are no leaks at any time. Additionally, it features a roll-top closure system that enhances these features.

However, compared to the winning model, this backpack has a disadvantage: it does not have a chest strap. This makes it less comfortable for long walks, so I would only recommend it for city use. Despite this, both the straps and the back are padded to provide greater comfort.
It is available in two sizes, but both have less capacity than the winning model. The redeeming feature is its internal design, with enough compartments to organize belongings, carry a laptop, and protect the phone. Also, this backpack has the design I liked most in the comparison; therefore, I consider it ideal for any occasion.
Why do we recommend it?
- It is completely waterproof.
- The back and straps are padded.
- Has compartments for all belongings.
- Has an elegant design.
To improve:
- Lacks a chest strap.
- Its capacity is smaller.
Skysper waterproof school backpack
The reason the Skysper waterproof backpack is last in the comparison is not its water resistance, which works very well. Its flaw is that, due to size and design, it is not suitable for carrying a laptop, is harder to clean, and does not have a rigid structure.

Is it water-resistant?
There is nothing negative to say about the Skysper waterproof backpack regarding its waterproofness. It is made of nylon fabric that prevents water passage, as do its zippers. It is the only one in the comparison without a roll-top closure system, but I have verified that this does not affect its performance. However, it takes longer to dry since the exterior remains wet longer.
What I did not like about this backpack is that it does not have enough space to carry a laptop, so it is more of a casual use item than for daily use. Its structure, on the other hand, is not rigid, so it falls to the ground when empty and is hard to keep upright. It is true that the straps and back are padded for greater comfort, but it lacks a chest strap for long walks.
Why do we recommend it?
- Completely prevents water entry.
- It is padded in the strap and back areas.
To improve:
- No space for a laptop.
- Lacks structure.
- Does not have a chest strap.
Frequently asked questions about waterproof backpacks
Which backpack brands are waterproof?
In Spain, several backpack brands stand out for offering waterproof models designed to protect belongings from water in any condition. Brands like Ortlieb, known for durability and hermetic roll closures, or Decathlon, with its Quechua range, offer reliable options for outdoor activities. Osprey also has specific water-resistant lines, as do Fjällräven and The North Face.
What is the difference between waterproof backpacks and water-repellent backpacks?
The main difference between a waterproof backpack and a water-repellent backpack lies in their protection capacity. A water-repellent backpack has a surface treatment that makes droplets slide off but does not prevent water entry during prolonged exposure or heavy rain. A waterproof backpack, on the other hand, has a design and materials that completely block water passage. Additionally, its seams are usually sealed, and its zippers are also protected.
How to know if a backpack is waterproof?
To know if a backpack is waterproof, certain key features should be looked for:
- Check the label or product description for waterproof certifications or ratings, such as “IPX” or a water column in millimeters (mm). A high millimeter value indicates greater resistance.
- Observe the type of closure: roll closures or thermosealed zippers are a good sign.
- Verify that seams are sealed and not just stitched.
- Monitoring the material used is also crucial.
What backpack material is waterproof?
Various materials are used to make waterproof backpacks. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is very common in dry bags due to its complete water resistance. Waxed canvas or TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) also offer excellent waterproofing and durability. Nylon or polyester, when coated with polyurethane (PU) or silicone layers and with sealed seams, also become very effective materials to prevent water entry.
