The history of the newspaper EL PAÍS is showcased this summer in the gardens of the Palau Robert in Barcelona, where from July 30 to September 15 the exhibition Moments can be seen, a selection of 50 photographs to celebrate the 50 years of the newspaper, which will be reached in 2026. The image that welcomes visitors, titled Barcelona Olímpica, is in the palace lobby and was taken by Joan Sánchez in 1992. In it, a diver trains in the Montjuïc pool just before the Olympic Games begin, and his great jump visually coincides with the towers of the Sagrada Família glimpsed in the background. Two icons that lead to the rest of the snapshots, which pass the baton of decades of many changes. After stopping in the Catalan capital, the exhibition will continue its route to Bilbao, from September 10 to 24; Seville, from October 1 to 14; and Málaga, from October 19 to November 6.

Just before the official inauguration, which was held this afternoon with the presence of the Secretary of Media of the Government, Carles Escolà, and the director of EL PAÍS Cataluña, Miquel Noguer, two girls stopped with curiosity in front of a photograph of the 15-M movement in the Plaza del Sol in 2011, taken by Álvaro García. One of them, Cora Moreno, brought her phone close to the QR code accompanying the image to find out what it was about. “I don’t know what 15-M is,” admitted this 17-year-old girl who will start a degree in Audiovisual Communication and Journalism at the University of Lleida in September. There is no better praise for an exhibition like this than to see that it challenges future journalists.
Later, the guests at the presentation made the same graphic journey through recent history. In Moments there are all kinds of photographs, from portraits, such as those of Pedro Almodóvar and Penélope Cruz in a limousine in Los Angeles during the promotion of All About My Mother, taken by Gorka Lejarcegi in 2000. Or images of pure photojournalism that capture an important historical moment, such as the one by Cristóbal Manuel about the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Also snapshots that show the beauty of art, as in a photograph of Miquel Barceló painting his UN mural in Geneva in 2008, captured by Agustí and Antonia Torres.
For its stop in Barcelona, images taken by photographers from the Catalonia newsroom have been chosen, such as the historic photograph of the Liceu destroyed by the 1994 fire, by Carles Ribas. From the same photographer is an image from the time of the covid pandemic lockdown in 2020. In addition, Massimiliano Minocri signs a moment captured on La Rambla after the 2017 attack and Albert García another turbulent event in the city on October 1, 2017, at the Ramon Llull school, where the ballot boxes for voting in the referendum were removed.

At the presentation, the Secretary of Media of the Generalitat thanked EL PAÍS for choosing Barcelona to commemorate its anniversary, where it already held the gala last May 4, and recalled that he studied at the EL PAÍS School of Journalism, currently directed by Javier Moreno, who was also director of the newspaper and was present at the event. For his part, the director of EL PAÍS Cataluña, Miquel Noguer, remembered the first journalists of the Catalonia newsroom and thanked them for their teachings of rigorous and brave journalism. Jordi Giné, an executive at Telefónica, expressed pride in sponsoring an exhibition like this. The EL PAÍS photography team in Barcelona is made up of Carles Ribas, Gianluca Battista, Massimiliano Minocri, and Albert Garcia.
Moments was inaugurated last May 1 as part of the EL PAÍS Festival, the newspaper’s cultural event to share its 50th anniversary with its readers and the public at Matadero Madrid, which gathered more than 40,000 visitors. It will then pass through Vigo and Gijón, where this graphic summary of the 50 years of a newspaper born the same year as the Constitution and that has covered the political, social, and cultural events of recent history will end its journey.
