The flames have turned Aldea del Fresno into a ghost town for six days. Its more than 3,500 residents were evacuated last Saturday due to the rapid advance of the fires in the western Madrid mountain range, and since then the town remains in an eerie silence, with a layer of ash covering terraces, gas stations, and vehicles abandoned in haste. Although there is no damage in the urban perimeter, the local police patrol the deserted streets and warn: “If anyone is left, they are thieves.” On Tuesday at five in the afternoon, it was announced that residents could return to their homes, but the town is still deserted. The persistent smell of smoke reveals that the nightmare is not over.

Aid is also planned to compensate for the reconstruction of livestock and agricultural facilities, fences, and enclosures, as announced last Monday by the President of the Junta, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, and the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Environment, and Environmental Policy, Joaquín Antonio Pino, who highlighted that it is a “comprehensive” aid package.

Additionally, once the pasture is regenerated, its immediate use will be allowed, maintaining the eligibility of these areas for PAC aid for 2027 and subsequent years. The President of the Junta, in a message on the ‘X’ network, reiterated that people are the priority of his government. “We are by their side. Now, during the emergency, and also in the future, in the recovery,” he pointed out. (EP)
