Two men aged 51 and 42 arrested as alleged responsible for the Almorox fire

The Civil Guard of Toledo has arrested two men, aged 51 and 42, as alleged responsible for the Almorox fire that later spread to the Community of Madrid. The evidence collected by the Civil Guard points to negligence in carrying out prohibited activities in extreme fire risk conditions.

According to sources from the investigation consulted by EL PAÍS, the detainees were performing welding work on a plot within a forested area in the town of Toledo. Work that at that time was prohibited, because the wildfire spread index in that area at the time the fire started “was extreme.”

The arrest took place at 8:55 this morning in Almorox and the detainees will be brought before the court today, specifically to Court number 2 of Torrijos which is handling the cases of this fire. The fire originated in a housing development in this town, and after this it spread to the Madrid municipality of Villa del Prado, where it joined the other two fires affecting the area and which later formed the great fire of the Sierra Oeste de Madrid, which is now the largest in Spain. It has affected more than 60,000 hectares between Ávila and the Community of Madrid.
