‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ achieves the best opening day in the history of Spain

Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the latest installment of Marvel’s famous superhero, raised 3.2 million euros this Wednesday on its first day of screening in Spanish theaters. The figure makes the debut the best opening day in the history of cinema in Spain, according to data provided by the auditor Rentrak. In just 24 hours, the film almost reaches what the highest-grossing titles of the year earned on their first weekend in the national market: Oppenheimer, by Christopher Nolan (4.4 million euros), and Super Mario Bros (4.9 million). It also already approaches half of what Torrente Presidente (6.9 million), the big hit of the season, earned in its first three days.

The film, once again starring Tom Holland and distributed by Sony Pictures, has landed in 421 cinemas and more than a thousand screens across the country, making it one of the largest commercial deployments recorded to date in the Spanish industry. The movie aims for a Wednesday to Sunday opening exceeding 10 million euros and to sign one of the best worldwide debuts of the year.

With these figures, it follows the path set by its predecessor, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which in 2021 earned seven million euros in the Spanish market during its first weekend. At the North American box office — in cinema, the box office is not counted by countries but by territories, and in this case, the US and Canada are grouped — that title achieved the second-best opening in history by raising 230.5 million euros (260 million dollars). For this new installment, which will premiere on July 31 in the North American country, the specialized publication Variety places the projections for its first weekend between 260 and 280 million dollars in the more than 4,300 cinemas where it will be shown.

If these forecasts are confirmed, it would enter a very select club: throughout the history of cinema, only nine titles have managed to surpass the 200 million dollar barrier in their opening weekend in that territory. A list of successes headed by another Marvel giant, Avengers: Endgame (2019), with a national opening of 357 million dollars and 1.2 billion dollars worldwide.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton — responsible for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings — the new film of the famous superhero, the commercial crown jewel for Marvel and Sony, bets for the fourth time on Tom Holland as Peter Parker. Alongside him, an ensemble cast brings together regulars like Zendaya and Jacob Batalon with names such as Jon Bernthal, Sadie Sink, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Mando, and Tramell Tillman.

It is a tremendously popular and multigenerational character. Jorge Iván, co-director of the Celsius 232 festival and the Avilés Comic Days, told EL PAIS a few days ago: “Spider-Man has known how to adapt to each generation without losing his essence. In recent years, the great success has been Miles Morales, born in the Ultimate universe and definitively consolidated with the Spider-Verse movies. His success lies in that it presents complex plots and, at the same time, respects both veteran fans and new generations.”
