Héctor Gutiérrez, an unknown and brave Mexican, wins the Chenel Cup

Héctor Gutiérrez, a bullfighter born in 1998 in the Mexican city of Aguascalientes, who took the alternative in November 2021 in his country, and who had only performed in Spain as a novice, rose last night as the winner of the sixth edition of the Copa Chenel, a competition organized by the Fundación Toro de Lidia and the Community of Madrid, in which modest bullfighters participate and whose prize is to be part of the poster for the bullfight on October 12 in Madrid alongside two prominent figures of the ranking.

For the first time, the final of the Cup was held at Las Ventas and for the occasion six bulls from the El Capea ranch — which was debuting in a foot bullfight — were chosen, a brand dedicated almost exclusively to rejoneo shows, and which offered very few opportunities for display. In fact, the winner of the night could only take a lap of honor with his first, a kind animal — the only one — with hardly any strength and with a face that seemed to miss the horses, and was applauded in the other, difficult and unbalanced.

Despite this, Gutiérrez lifted the trophy of the competition for his dedication and commitment throughout the event. He is not exquisite with the passes, but he stood out for his courage and determination, which made him participate in quites and make the most of the scarce collaboration of the two bulls in his lot.

The El Capea cattle disappointed, uneven in presentation — very lacking in stature and some bulls comfortable in the face — which developed a disordered game in the first third, defended themselves with little breed in the muleta and overshadowed the effort of the bullfighters.

The Mexican bullfighter confirmed the alternative with the first of the afternoon, without fierceness and with cold behavior, ideal for rejoneo, breedless, obedient and dull, and was able to stand out in a tempered series of round passes and a good natural before delivering a deadly sword thrust that allowed him to take a lap of honor after a slight ear request. In the other, with short travel, without class and approaching with a high face, Gutiérrez showed that he is not scared by difficulties and risked himself gallantly before the ugly behavior of his opponent.

His final companions, the Salmantinos Alejandro Marcos and Manuel Diosleguarde, had fewer options, arriving at the ring with the firm decision to fight until the end for the trophy, two bullfighters with capacity and depth in their hands who crashed against the very scarce conditions of their bulls.

Marcos’ lot showed genius and discomfort, which allowed the bullfighter to give the impression that he can give more than he showed in the ring. He has skill and shows good manners, but neither of these served him to triumph.

And Diosleguarde has class and depth and imparts passion to his bullfighting, which allows him to connect easily with the stands. He handled the cape smoothly in the long change in the third and the verónicas with which he received the sixth, and in a quite by chicuelinas finished with a revolera that he shared with Gutiérrez in the third, he drew long and heartfelt chest passes, and he has a sense of calm and taste in the drawing of the muletazos. But his first deflated very soon, and the good final naturals and the high assisted passes with which he finished the sixth’s performance only served to leave a good taste in his passage through Las Ventas.
