Technology is not new in the kitchen, and appliances are proof of that, from microwaves to the latest air fryers. However, when it comes to utensils, it is harder to find advances to make food preparation easier. Fortunately, there are exceptions that can be very practical for everyday use. This is the case with electric knives, which incorporate a motor to move the blades and facilitate cutting tasks. That is why at EL PAÍS Escaparate we have tested four models to choose the best.

Which electric kitchen knives have we chosen and how have we tested them?

As with manual kitchen knives, in this comparison we also focused on choosing models with stainless steel blades, as this is the most reliable material for this type of utensil. Equally important in these cases is the power of each electric knife, so we decided to select models with different motors to compare their efficiency. The selection consists of four brands: Clatronic, Orbegozo, Tristar, and Moulinex.

The tests consisted of cutting different foods, such as bread, meat, and frozen products, to check their performance in various usage situations. The most important thing was to evaluate the quality of the cut and the ease with which each model cuts through foods of different hardness.

We also paid attention to their stainless steel blades, as well as the safety and release systems each knife incorporates. Additionally, we evaluated the ergonomics of the handle, the level of vibration during use, and whether they are comfortable for both right-handed and left-handed people. Finally, we considered the motor noise, as it directly affects comfort when used for several consecutive minutes.

Which electric knife was the winner?

The Clatronic EM 3062 electric knife gave me the best impressions during the tests, both in terms of functionality and safety. Its design is very attractive and modern, and it feels very comfortable in the hand.

How effective is this electric knife at cutting?

Although, in terms of power (150 W), it ranks second in the comparison, the Clatronic electric knife was the best for cutting during the tests. I had no problem slicing bread, meat, or frozen foods. This is also influenced by its stainless steel blades, which offer enough solidity to perform any cutting task in the kitchen and are easy to change.

When working with this type of knife, safety was one of my main concerns. But with this model, I never felt it was risky to use. First, because it has a safety lock to prevent accidental activation. Also, as mentioned above, its blade change system requires no effort, so it can be done safely.

Both the handle and the power button of this model were quite comfortable for daily use. The handle, because it has a design that is very ergonomic for both right-handed and left-handed people alike. Similarly, the button is easy to operate to start it, so it requires no effort. I also liked that it produces very little vibration, which not only affects comfort but also the precision of cuts. Still, I must mention it does generate slight noise from the motor’s operation.

The blades of this model can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher for greater convenience. It is true that its design is not the most modern and elegant, but being white, it matches the rest of the appliances in any kitchen. The best part is that its price is not the highest in this comparison, so I think it is a great purchase for most people.

Why do we recommend it?

The best:

  • Cuts all types of food very well, soft and hard.
  • Has features for safe use.
  • Very comfortable for both right-handed and left-handed users.
  • Generates little vibration.

To improve:

  • The motor produces slight noise.
  • Its design is not the most modern.

Other alternatives to the best electric kitchen knife

Orbegozo electric knife

Undoubtedly, the most notable feature of the Orbegozo CU 3800 electric knife is that it has the most powerful motor, with 180 W capacity. Overall, it offers the same cutting ability as the winning model but at a higher price.

How does it cut?

The cutting capacity of the Orbegozo electric knife can be perfectly matched with that of the winning model in this comparison. Either is a great addition to any kitchen. I could notice its 180 W power when slicing, effortlessly, both frozen foods and bread alike.

This model also stands out for its safety. It has a safety lock to prevent accidental activation, and the blade release system is very easy to operate. Also, it is a lightweight electric knife that any family member can operate. It is true that the motor generates slight vibration noise, but nothing uncomfortable.

I also liked its design, as I even found it more modern than the winning knife’s design. However, its price is higher, so I do not consider that these small differences—which do not really impact cutting ability—justify paying more for this model.

Why do we recommend it?

The best:

  • Very good cutting capacity for all types of food.
  • Modern design.
  • Safe blade release and lock button.

To improve:

  • The motor produces slight vibration noise.
  • More expensive than the winning model.

Tristar electric knife

Although, on paper, its power is lower than the two previous models, the Tristar EM-2107 electric knife cuts any food well. Its disadvantages are that it is a bit heavier and that it is harder to release the blades.

What results does this electric knife offer?

It is true that, according to the manufacturer, the Tristar electric knife only has a power of 120 W. Despite this, I had no problem cutting bread or frozen foods, so it offers good performance for daily kitchen tasks.

My main problem with this model is that, although it has a safety lock so the blades do not activate accidentally, I did not find it as safe as the two models above. The reason is that releasing the blades to wash them requires some effort, which could cause an accident if not careful enough.

In the hand, its design is very comfortable for both right-handed and left-handed people. What I did notice is that its weight is a bit higher than the better-rated models, so it can tire you out faster during prolonged use. But its worst flaw is that it is the loudest knife in this comparison and also produces a burnt plastic smell after a few minutes.

Why do we recommend it?

The best:

  • Cuts all types of food well.
  • Ergonomic design for anyone.

To improve:

  • The blade release system requires some effort.
  • The motor is very noisy and produces a burnt plastic smell.
  • More expensive than the winning model.

Moulinex electric knife

I found several problems with this Moulinex Secanto DJAC41 electric knife. It requires a lot of effort to cut food, it is hard to release the blades, and its power button is very stiff.

How does it cut?

Honestly, most of my experience with the Moulinex Secanto DJAC41 electric knife has been negative. It is the model with the least power in the comparison, and that shows when cutting food, as it requires much more effort, especially with harder foods. The worst part is that it also takes more force to release the blades, which I found very unsafe.

Another thing I found very strange is that the power button is very stiff and must be pressed hard to activate. It was also the heaviest knife in the comparison, so my hand got tired faster. Its motor is noisy—though not as much as the Tristar model—and it is the most expensive product of the four I tested.

Why do we recommend it?

The best:

  • Has a safety lock.
  • Has an ergonomic design.

To improve:

  • Requires effort to cut hard foods.
  • Blades are not easy to release.
  • Power button is stiff.
  • Heavy design in the hand.
  • Motor is noisy.
  • It is the most expensive knife in the comparison.

Frequently asked questions about electric kitchen knives

What advantages does an electric kitchen knife offer?

An electric knife facilitates cutting difficult foods, such as roasted meats, freshly baked bread, or even frozen foods. Its precision and power ensure uniform slices, perfect for professional presentations. Additionally, it reduces manual effort, which is beneficial for people with limited mobility.

The versatility of the electric knife allows cutting a wide variety of foods. From red meats and poultry to hard-crust breads, cheeses, and vegetables. Each type of food requires a specific blade to achieve optimal results.

How to choose the best electric knife for my needs?

Consider the motor power, blade quality, and handle ergonomics. A model with several interchangeable blades expands cutting options. Safety is also crucial: look for a knife with a lock and storage case.

Are electric knives safe?

The safety of an electric knife largely depends on proper use. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, avoid touching moving blades, and keep the knife out of children’s reach. Also, a model with a locking system reduces the risk of accidents.
