The fight against illegal gold mining in the Amazon, one of the main threats to the rainforest, indigenous groups, and other communities in the region, is done with science. Experts from the National Institute of Brasilia work in a “gold laboratory” and collect samples throughout the country to analyze the “fingerprint” of this mineral and thus determine if it was illegally extracted in protected areas.
