Any grief depends on the person experiencing it. In the case of Sandra Bullock (Virginia, 62 years old), it took the actress three years to be able to speak publicly about the death in August 2023 of her boyfriend of eight years, photographer Bryan Randall. After three years suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the actress’s partner died at 57, a news that “his beloved family” shared through a statement published by People magazine. Recently, during her appearance on the SmartLess podcast, hosted by actors Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, Bullock recalled those terrible days.

Specifically, the star of Practical Magic, the 1998 romantic comedy whose sequel will be released next September, answered a question some had about her partner’s illness: why Randall kept his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) a secret. “They didn’t allow me to talk about it. That was the request and I tried; I respected it,” the Oscar-winning actress confessed in this episode of SmartLess, published on August 17 for subscribers of the show, but which will be public on August 24. “I know why he asked me not to,” she added, revealing that this request ultimately ended up isolating her during that process.
About the illness, she recounted that it was “a process of elimination over the course of a year. And there are moments when you have to go back again and again and they give you a goal, something to do, exercises, breathing tests… all those things.” She, who assured she was not afraid of the disease and is a good planner, said however that it ended up becoming very complicated.
Bullock explains that only her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, knew that the photographer had ALS. According to what she said on the podcast, the actress assumed she could “handle” no one else knowing. But the situation became even more difficult when, besides dealing with her partner’s illness, she had to manage raising her two children (adopted by the actress) amid the COVID pandemic, which, in her words, became “a pretty tough triple adversity.” Finally, the Proposal actress ended up sharing her situation with others. Among them, her friends Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka, Bateman’s wife.
“I started crying over Bryan’s death four years before he passed away,” Bullock also confessed, reflecting that the photographer “was sick for half of our relationship” and describing the diagnosis as “traumatic.” “My person left long before the body. I think I never processed it until after his death, because you feel trapped in this routine,” she revealed.
“With great sadness we share that on August 5 Bryan Randall passed away peacefully after a three-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Bryan decided to keep his life with ALS private, and all of us who cared for him did everything possible to honor his request,” said the statement released by People in 2023.
The relationship between Bullock and Randall, who had never thought about getting married — despite some rumors in 2018 that soon stopped — was always very discreet. She had been married between 2005 and 2010 to producer and businessman Jesse James: “I am a person who has gone through a divorce process. I have found the love of my life. We share two beautiful children, three, with his eldest daughter [Skylar, now an adult, from a previous relationship of Randall]. She is the best in the world,” she said in December 2021 on a television program. Regarding her children, Bullock adopted her eldest son, Louis, in early 2010; and her daughter, Laila, in 2015.
Practical Magic 2, in which the actress reunites thirty years later with Nicole Kidman and most of the cast from the first film, including veteran actress Stockard Channing, will be released next September. Among the new additions will be Maisie Williams and Joey King, who will play Bullock’s daughters in the fiction. Regarding Bullock, the latest film from the Oscar-winning actress for Best Actress for The Blind Side (2009) was The Lost City, alongside Channing Tatum, in 2022.
