A 44-year-old Italian tourist was injured this Saturday after being hit by a tourist train in Toledo. The accident occurred shortly after 3:00 p.m., when, for reasons under investigation, the train — without a driver and without passengers inside at that moment — moved several meters from its stop at Cuesta de los Capuchinos until it collided with the parapet that separates Unión Street from the Alcázar Park, right in the Historic Center.

The impact of the train broke part of the wall, leaving the locomotive suspended in midair. Local Police and National Police officers, several ambulances, and a fire brigade were dispatched to the scene. The initial hypotheses point to a “technical failure” as the cause of the accident, although it will be the investigation opened by the Local Police that clarifies what happened.
In the accident, an Italian tourist who was walking in the area when the train started moving was injured and was taken in a mobile ICU to the University Hospital of Toledo with an open wound on an arm. The man is hospitalized in the health center, although his condition is “stable,” according to sources from the Castilla-La Mancha Health Service (SESCAM).

The train’s locomotive was removed from the site by a large crane and taken to the municipal workshops, where appropriate analyses will be carried out to more precisely determine the cause of the accident. EL PAÍS has contacted the company Trainvision Spain SL, which manages the Toledo tourist train with an annual fee of 860,000 euros per year, and which has declined to comment on the matter.
