Podemos kicks off the electoral machinery for the general elections at the start of the political season. The party led by Ione Belarra plans to officially launch this Saturday the candidacy of the former Minister of Equality and MEP, Irene Montero, for the presidency of the Government, a move they had already announced in April 2025. Sources from the party add that the event taking place tomorrow in Madrid will also serve to present the main points of their proposal for these elections. Podemos, which currently has four deputies in the Mixed Group of the Congress and ran in 2023 within the Sumar coalition, has not yet decided whether it will share a list with other formations of the so-called alternative left, in a context, according to all polls, of a strong advance of the far right and with the space more divided and weaker than in the previous electoral cycle.
Sources from Podemos convey that, in the face of the rise of parties like Vox, wars, and the rising cost of housing and basic products, Montero will place at the center “the improvement of material living conditions, social rights, and the defense of peace.” A “return to basics” in politics to “be able to live well,” they summarize.
The number two of the organization will propose five priorities that she would develop, if she reaches the Government, in the first year of the next legislature. These include regulating housing prices, particularly rents; reducing the workday to 35 hours and a minimum wage of 1,800 euros; recovering the purchasing power of families and workers against the profits of large companies; a political position against military investment; and the fight against the climate emergency.
“With this approach, Montero’s goal is to articulate a clearly left-wing candidacy that aspires to be as broad as possible,” they insist in her team, where they believe there are many voters who can be mobilized again “with clear proposals that address the main causes of the discontent of millions of people,” they convey.

Alliance politics, however, will be one of the elements that will define the chances of success of the political space in the general elections. The Sumar parties in the Government (IU, Comuns, Más Madrid, and Movimiento Sumar) have not yet decided on a leader or brand, a matter they will resolve in the coming weeks and which will limit the margin for agreement with Podemos. The difficulty of the space in obtaining deputies in small and medium constituencies advises understanding, but the 2023 experience, with a last-minute pact that Belarra’s group criticized after Montero was vetoed from the lists, complicates the agreement. The general secretary will also run as the lead candidate in the regional elections in the Community of Madrid, facing Minister Mónica García, leader of Más Madrid, in what could be a campaign very close to the general elections, depending on the president’s decision to call them.
As has been usual since the party’s birth in 2014, Montero’s candidacy will seek a strong presence on social networks, where the far right, they acknowledge, has gained ground in recent years. Nevertheless, Montero has one million followers on her main public profiles, and the strategy is to use that reach to attract younger voters, they point out in the leadership.
