A fight in a square in Lleida between more than a dozen men of Pakistani origin, armed with katanas, other bladed weapons, and sticks, ended with five of them injured, some seriously. Several witnesses to the events alerted the emergency number 112, and the medical personnel from the Medical Emergency System (SEM) who arrived at the scene transferred the injured to the Arnau de Vilanova University Hospital in the capital of Lleida.

According to the Mossos d’Esquadra, they received the alert about the disturbances around seven in the morning this Wednesday, and several patrols went to the scene. The agents from the Lleida Investigation Unit have opened an investigation to identify and locate the perpetrators. So far, no arrests have been made nor have any of the weapons used in the fight been seized.
The events took place in the plaça dels Pagesos, a location where, according to sources close to the case, many temporary workers gather early in the morning waiting for vans to pick them up to take them to their different workplaces in cooperatives or fields. This would explain why there were dozens of people in the square at that time, although only about a dozen participated in the events.

For now, according to these sources, the reason for the fight is unknown, which left at least three injured by bladed weapons, one seriously with a wound in the chest, near the heart, another in the shoulder, and another in the face. Additionally, two more men suffered injuries caused by sticks, one of them with an open wound on the head and various contusions. The current condition of the victims is unknown because the hospital does not report on their progress.
Several of the attackers fled the scene with the weapons used before the police arrived. Investigators have taken statements from several witnesses who were in the square and have also gone to the health center to hear the victims’ version. Communication difficulties due to language may complicate the quick identification and location of the attackers, sources close to the case point out. Investigators will also try to find if there are surveillance cameras in the area that could help clarify what happened.
