Victoria Beckham speaks for the first time about the distancing with Brooklyn: "The only thing we have tried is to protect our children"

A year ago, around this same time, rumors of a possible rift in the Beckham family were growing louder. A controversy that intensified after the celebrations for David Beckham’s 50th birthday. After months of hints, absences, and leaks, in January the eldest Beckham decided to cut ties with his family, and he did so publicly through a text in which he pointed fingers at his parents and aired all the dirty laundry that until now had been mere rumors. “I don’t want to reconcile with my family,” “I have been controlled by my parents,” or “They sent my siblings to attack me on social media,” were some of Brooklyn Beckham’s phrases.

No member of the Beckhams has spoken directly about what happened. Until now. The first to do so was Victoria, and she did it in an interview published by The Wall Street Journal. A report that reviews her life, her career as a singer in the Spice Girls, her marriage to the footballer, and her beginnings in the fashion world with her own eponymous brand. And, of course, the topic that has made headlines worldwide cannot be missing: the breakup of the relationship with her eldest son.

“When I ask Victoria about Brooklyn, she doesn’t answer with his name,” says the journalist in charge of the interview. “We have always loved our children very much. We have always tried to be the best parents possible. We have been in the public eye for over 30 years, and the only thing we have tried to do is protect and love our children,” replies the fashion designer. “That’s all I want to say about it,” she concludes on the subject. However, she does mention her children at other points in the conversation. “Being a mother of young children and adult children… My goodness! It’s very different from having small kids. I think we are trying to do the best we can,” she mentions at another moment.

She cannot help but boast about her other children. “Cruz is on tour right now, poor thing. He has achieved it from scratch,” she says about her offspring who has chosen the world of music. Harper, the youngest in the family who is only 14 years old, is already starting to make her way in the industry: “She is very sweet, very kind, very hardworking, and also very sensible, which I think is very important.”

Victoria states that the negative press has not affected her business, even though she has been constantly targeted in recent months: “I think, ultimately, people buy my product because it is really good. I don’t think they buy my eyeliner just because it’s me.”

Brooklyn hinted that his mother danced “very inappropriately” at his wedding with Nicola Peltz: “She intercepted the first dance with my wife, which had been planned for weeks with a romantic song. In front of our 500 guests, Marc Anthony called me to the stage, where according to the plan our romantic dance was going to take place, but instead there was my mother waiting to dance with me. She danced very inappropriately with me in front of everyone. I have never felt more uncomfortable or humiliated in my entire life.” A statement that was soon denied by another of the protagonists: Marc Anthony. “It is extremely unfortunate how everything is unfolding, but what is being told is nowhere near the truth (…) I have nothing to say about what is happening with the family. They are a wonderful family, I have known them since before the children were born,” he explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

The former footballer also spoke, although indirectly, about his children. “I have tried to do the same with my children, to educate them. They make mistakes, but children have the right to make mistakes. That’s how they learn. That’s what I try to teach them. Sometimes you also have to let them make those mistakes,” he said during his participation in the Davos forum last January.
