The Civil Guard of Salamanca is investigating a man for animal abuse and abandonment after having 60 dead sheep and “others in extreme conditions, without food or veterinary care” on his livestock farm. The individual, 43 years old, had registered 568 animals on that farm, but only 260 were alive when agents from the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Civil Guard went to that place in the Salamanca town of Aldehuela de la Bóveda. The investigation began when, in January, “several bodies of sheep without life and in an advanced state of decomposition” were found on a path near that town, according to a statement from the Civil Guard. The agents present at the livestock farm discovered dozens of animals in poor condition or “agonizing,” beyond the carcasses.

The Civil Guard of Salamanca has explained that the actions of its agents after finding the decomposing remains have allowed the investigation of this farmer, in collaboration with veterinarians from the territorial service of Agriculture and Livestock of the Junta de Castilla y León. Once the man was located, they inspected “two livestock farms owned by him located in Aldehuela de la Bóveda and Villalba de los Llanos.” Between both facilities “at least 60 carcasses of sheep and lambs in different states of decomposition were found, as well as scattered bone remains and skins.”
Additionally, “there were several areas of small piles where the person responsible for the animals had tried to burn them, with agents recovering ear tags and plastic labels of sheep and lambs that were not found in the facilities.” They only found 240 sheep and 20 lambs alive, all in deplorable condition: “Poor sanitary, feeding, and care conditions and in some cases in agonizing conditions, with diseases or even trapped in fences.”

The authorities perceived that these specimens suffered “a situation of prolonged abandonment, with facilities lacking adequate hygienic-sanitary conditions, without veterinary care control and with a generalized state of unhealthiness incompatible with animal welfare.” This combination of neglect and cruelty to the animals has led to the owner of the Salamanca farm being investigated for crimes of animal abuse and abandonment.
