The best automatic hose reel
Who doesn’t like to show off a beautiful and well-kept garden? Keeping the lawn green, plants in good condition, and everything well organized requires consistency. And, of course, watering is one of the key tasks to achieve this. However, what should be a simple task often becomes a headache: properly winding the hose after each use, avoiding knots, choosing a place to store it without taking up too much space…
To avoid these situations, automatic hose reels (or winders) are a very practical accessory as they facilitate watering gardens and patios and keep the outdoors tidy. They are based on a system that extracts the length of hose needed and then automatically rewinds it via a retractable mechanism. With this model, we avoid jerks, knots, and the usual wear that traditional hoses suffer.
How I chose and tested the products
To make this comparison, I first researched the most important brands that manufacture this type of product. Once I chose the four models, the next step was to test them in real conditions for several days: for this, I had to connect them beforehand to the water outlet in my parents’ garden where I conducted the tests.
The aspects I considered in each analysis were the following:
- Design: from the point of view of the build quality of the reel and the hose.
- Automatic rewind system: how it works and if the hose rewinds smoothly, quickly, and without jams.
- Comfort: referring to the ease of use of the models.
- Experience: a summary of the three criteria mentioned and, additionally, I considered if the automatic hose reel includes, for example, a rotating holder. Also the available accessories and the assembly process for setup.
Why can you trust me?
I have been in tech journalism for two decades. During this time, I have had the privilege of witnessing how technology advances to make daily life easier and have been able to report it in various media. Although I have lost count of how many products have passed through my hands, I confess that the enthusiasm and feelings remain the same. Laptops, tablets, phones, cameras, activity trackers, smartwatches… I set no limits when choosing a device and make the most of its possibilities as a true tech consumer.
With carrying handle: Kärcher HBX 4.20 Automatic

Who is it for: homeowners with a small/medium garden or patio who need a reel that stands out not only for its user experience but also for its excellent build quality.
Why we chose it: the size was the first thing that caught my attention. Although it includes, like the Cecotec model, a 20-meter hose, it is bulkier; but it also conveys a sense of higher quality. From its design, there are two details I want to highlight. The first is the small integrated holder in the anchor where the reel is placed, which is very useful for resting the nozzle and avoiding leaving it on the ground. The second is the handle on the top, which makes perfect sense thanks to the FlexChange system, which allows you to remove the reel from the wall mount (you anchor it to the wall with screws) where you have it stored without tools. This is useful if for some reason you want to store it at home or in the garage, although I tell you it is designed to withstand different weather conditions. By the way, since this mount can rotate, it is easier to direct the hose to the point you want.
Another aspect where I noticed the most differences compared to the rest is the automatic rewind mechanism, as the hose slides in and out more smoothly. Also, its segment locking system works especially well. By automatically locking every few centimeters, it allows you to precisely adjust the length you need.
Its weak points: it is the least economical option.
For small gardens: Gardena RollUp S

Who is it for: users who do not want to drill and want a portable model.
Why we chose it: its philosophy is completely different from the rest and this makes the user experience different too. I mention this because this reel for small gardens is not wall-mounted. It is installed directly on the ground using a metal stake and, I have to admit, the assembly seemed curious to me, although it requires some skill to ensure the reel’s stability. First, you drive a metal spike into the ground with the help of a bar included in the kit and then you have to place a sleeve fixed with screws and, finally, the reel body is fitted onto the base until it is firmly attached. Since this rotating base allows the reel to rotate 360º on itself, the freedom of movement is complete. All this in a set that bets on Gardena’s distinctive colors, gray and turquoise.
The tests went well. As in other models, the hose automatically locks in segments as you pull it out, and a slight tug is enough to release the mechanism and allow it to rewind by itself. I had no problems with the automatic mechanism in this regard and it returned inside in a controlled way, without sudden jerks. Regarding the nozzle, you can switch between a concentrated jet and a softer one, depending on what you need.
Its weak points: its use is more limited, as the fixing stake is designed exclusively for grass or soil. This reduces its versatility compared to other systems that can be installed on the wall.
Two in one: Cecotec HydroShell 200 Pro

Who is it for: looking for an automatic reel that lets you choose the spray shape and the amount of water it releases? Keep reading!
Why we chose it: I would choose this model for two main reasons. The first is that its gun allows you to select up to eight spray types, a feature I value positively because it adapts watering to different situations. Also, it is a differentiating point compared to other hose reels, which usually only offer the classic concentrated and fan spray modes, which disperse water in fine threads. The second reason is the integrated soap reservoir in the gun itself. This way, you can mix water and soap to clean, for example, a terrace or even the car if it is nearby.

When analyzing the Kärcher and Gardena reels, I noticed there are two visible hose sections: on one hand, the one you use for watering and, on the other, a shorter secondary one on the side that connects the reel to the tap. That side hose is designed, among other things, so the main hose entrance is better guided and the winding is cleaner and tidier. I mention this detail because the entrance system of this reel, along with Vonroc’s, is somewhat more basic, which does not mean it doesn’t work well.
Its weak points: its finish is too plasticky.
High-quality hose: Vonroc HRX504

Who is it for: users who want a model for large gardens.
Why we chose it: as with the Kärcher and Cecotec reels, this model is designed to be wall-mounted using the included bracket. In this case, since it includes a 35-meter hose, it is intended for large gardens. The finish of this hose conveyed quality to me and suggests great durability, especially if frequent or intensive use is expected. In daily use, however, it is advisable to pull out and rewind the hose gently, as sometimes the mechanism may offer some resistance or small jams. However, with use, you gain some practice and the system ends up working more smoothly and comfortably.
Another detail to highlight is that the box can rotate up to 180º once the bracket is mounted, which makes it easier to precisely and accurately direct the hose to the point you want to water. The included nozzle is simple but functional. Meanwhile, its coupling and uncoupling system is very well resolved because it leaves no doubt about its correct placement: it clicks into place and is perfectly fixed.
Its weak points: the finish is too plastic and I missed an integrated handle to carry it from one place to another if necessary.

Frequently asked questions about automatic hose reels
How does an automatic hose reel work?
These devices incorporate a retractable mechanism inside that allows the hose to be automatically rewound after use. Generally, you only need to give a slight tug for the system to activate the winding.
What hose length is most suitable?
The choice mainly depends on the area you want to cover during watering. For terraces or small patios, a hose between 10 and 15 meters is usually enough, while for larger gardens it is common to opt for longer models of 20, 30, or more meters.
Do they require any maintenance?
Although maintenance is quite simple, it is advisable to take care of some aspects to prolong their lifespan: keep the hose clean, avoid impacts on the reel, and protect the mechanism from adverse weather conditions.
Is installation complicated?
Generally, no. Many automatic reels include mounts and accessories to facilitate assembly and can be installed using basic tools. Still, it is recommended to follow the manufacturer’s instructions step by step.
Is the hose included?
In most cases yes, although it may vary depending on the chosen model. Some manufacturers also add extra accessories such as connectors, watering guns, or different nozzles.
