Former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has asked the judge of the National Court José Luis Calama to postpone his appearance scheduled for next June 2, as reported by El Mundo and confirmed by legal sources to EL PAÍS. The former president’s lawyer, procedural law professor Víctor Moreno Catena, argues that he needs more time to prepare the defense after the case file implicating the socialist leader at the “apex” of an alleged influence network became known.
The former president distanced himself from all accusations in a video he released last Tuesday in which he defended that “all” his public and private activity “has always been carried out with absolute respect for legality.” “I have never had a commercial company either directly or through third parties, neither in Spain nor outside Spain, nor have I participated in any such operation,” he emphasized.
The case file made public this Monday consists of thousands of documents, folders, tax reports, and police documents that the former president must study thoroughly. Other lawyers involved in the investigation see it as “logical” that Zapatero wants to postpone his statement for a few days to be able to fully understand all the elements that the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, which has been driving this investigation since 2024, has been accumulating.
