Irene has posted an ad on social media looking for a roommate preferably vegetarian or vegan because she and her housemates do not want meat to be cooked. The text is brief but concise, but just in case, she starts her segment on the program Vamos a ver, on Telecinco, reiterating that she does not ban meat at home, but rather its cooking for the sake of coexistence. Even so, the caption defines her as: “Irene: does not want carnivores in her house.”

The host, Patricia Pardo, is accompanied by several panelists. Everyone puts their hands on their heads when some of the responses received are reviewed. Manners, respect, and decorum have been lost. Oh dear, it couldn’t be known, coming from that kind place that social media is. The interview goes well, Irene smiles and has an articulated speech for the two or three minutes of her segment. Pardo empathizes with her, attentive to what’s next and the next topic in the program’s rundown. She has an hour and fifteen minutes including commercials, and in that mix, there has to be a bit of everything.

Irene takes the opportunity to comment that what she has received on social media has little to do with her ad and more to do with being a woman and Catalan. But the show goes on, and Pardo, who knows that the matter is already settled, thanks her because it’s time to move on to another issue. But Irene asks for the floor, and what she does is accuse the program of further spreading the hate speech when the real problem is the price of housing and speculation. And that is where the mistake happens, in how the blow is handled. Pardo knows much more about TV than I do and is more than used to dealing with situations like this, which is why it is regrettable that she responds: “Girl, really, how bitter you are Irene, I honestly tell you. How little you know us, how little respect and how little gratitude you show.” Seconds of TV that could have been used with: “Thank you very much, Irene, but we are out of time.” So Irene, knowing that a Calle 13 has been made, entering the system to exploit it from within, smiles satisfied, mentions Ana Rosa Quintana, and says goodbye blowing a kiss. “Sometimes life gives you what you deserve,” adds Pardo before talking about Nicole Kidman. How important it is to know how to lose, and even more to take it well.
