The main telecommunications operators in Spain —Telefónica, MasOrange, and Vodafone— together with the infrastructure manager Cellnex have deployed a special technical operation focused on more than 700 key points to guarantee data traffic and roaming during the total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026. The measure responds to the sudden increase in demand expected in rural, coastal, and mountainous areas, where the total darkness band will offer optimal visibility to millions of observers.
The astronomical event, the first total eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula since 1912, crosses the territory from west to east during the peak summer season. In this scenario, the industry seeks to shield fixed and mobile communications against potential congestion caused by massive live video consumption and multimedia file sending.
Telefónica has confirmed specific actions at more than 200 locations along the peninsular route. The plan includes capacity reinforcement in mobile networks located in 13 autonomous communities: Aragón, Asturias, Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Catalonia, Valencian Community, Galicia, La Rioja, Madrid, Navarra, and the Basque Country. Vodafone Spain, owned by the Zegona fund, has adapted its infrastructure at about 200 geographic points identified as key observation nodes. Vodafone’s operation involves more than 1,700 mobile phone cells that will remain under a continuous monitoring scheme before, during, and after the solar transition. The company indicated that it has activated rapid intervention protocols to resolve priority technical incidents in areas exposed to demand peaks.

In the wholesale infrastructure field, Cellnex Telecom has expanded the monitoring of the towers and sites it operates both in Spain and Portugal, where the phenomenon will be partially visible. Acting as a neutral provider for telephone companies and private networks, Cellnex will coordinate maintenance operations to sustain signal continuity in isolated or hard-to-access sites.
Alfonso Álvarez, CEO of Cellnex Iberia, stated in a press release that communication networks constitute critical infrastructures during events that concentrate large volumes of people in confined spaces. The company will keep its energy backup and redundancy systems active at nodes to neutralize possible local power supply failures and guarantee operational stability.
