The explosion of a gas tanker this Thursday in the Las Granjas neighborhood in Cuernavaca (Morelos) has left an initial toll of 21 injured, according to the State Coordination of Civil Protection of Morelos (CEPCM). Neighbors of the neighborhood have told local media that they heard a loud explosion, after which various vehicles, homes, and electrical wiring caught fire. On its social media, the Cuernavaca City Council has indicated that firefighters and Civil Protection personnel have been deployed to attend the emergency and have asked the public not to approach the accident area so that the aid units can move freely. So far, the authorities have not detailed the condition of the injured.

Videos of the incident show a long column of black smoke over the area while some people run around and record the scene. In other images, the damage to various properties on a street can be seen where emergency personnel, with their faces covered, try to extinguish the flames. Civil Protection personnel from the municipality of Jiutepec, adjacent to Cuernavaca, are also at the scene attending the incident. According to the CEPCM, the fire has reached four vehicles and nine houses and occurred due to a leak while the tanker was supplying gas to one of the affected homes.

The blast reduced the factory of the highly flammable merchandise to ashes and unrecognizable. This new incident involving a gas tanker also recalls the tragedy in Iztapalapa, Mexico City, almost a year ago. The vehicle, which according to authorities was speeding, overturned and caught fire on the La Concordia bridge (south of the capital). The blast, with flames reaching a radius of 180 meters, left at least 32 dead. The tragedy then sparked controversy over the transport of hazardous materials and the regulation of their transfer during peak traffic hours and in densely populated areas.
