Fitness is one of the sports disciplines with the most followers due to the benefits it brings to the body: it improves endurance, promotes cardiovascular health, increases flexibility, strengthens muscles, and helps prevent injuries. An important part of this work involves training stability and proprioception, two aspects often neglected but that can make a difference both in sports performance and daily activities.

You don’t need to fill your house with equipment to achieve this. A good balance cushion allows you to perform simple exercises to strengthen ankles and knees, as well as squats, planks, rehabilitation work, or mobility exercises. Additionally, some users also use them for short periods on the desk chair. By turning the seat into a slightly unstable surface, they force small adjustments to maintain balance and prevent staying completely still while working at the computer.

How we chose and tested the products

With a maximum budget of 25 euros, I selected four of the most popular balance cushions from brands experienced in sports and fitness accessories. Although one uses a format with two spheres instead of a traditional disc, all are designed to improve stability, work proprioception, and strengthen muscles through similar exercises.

I tested each for fifteen days, using them in different training sessions and everyday situations. Occasionally, I also had the help of my partner, who weighs around 90 kilos, to check how they responded under greater load. I used them for one-leg balance exercises, squats, lunges, planks, and stretches, as well as using them as an active seat while working at the computer to assess comfort during prolonged periods. When comparing results, I paid special attention to the following aspects:

  • Material quality: resistance of the PVC or material used, finishes, and feeling of solidity during use.
  • Comfort of use: behavior during different exercises, stability, grip, and comfort both with shoes and barefoot.
  • Inflation system: ease of inflating and deflating, quality of the included pump, and ability to precisely adjust pressure.
  • Performance over time: whether it maintains air properly after several days of use and offers consistent behavior in each training.

Why can you trust me?

Throughout my journalistic career, I have always sought to turn complex information into clear, practical, and easy-to-understand content for the reader. Therefore, in comparisons, my goal has always been the same: to understand the characteristics of the products I test and explain which models are most suitable according to each need. I like to put myself in the reader’s shoes and imagine their doubts, which is why I do not limit myself to describing specifications; I contextualize them and highlight the best (and worst) of their performance, use, and design. My purpose is for each analysis to inspire confidence and help make informed decisions.

Versatility: Bozeera

We test the best balance cushions.
Bozeera balance cushion. EL PAÍS ESCAPARATE

Who is it for: for those who will perform a wide variety of exercises and need to adjust the difficulty level according to their needs.

Why we recommend it: at first glance, it conveys a great sense of quality. Although the surface feels firm, its reliefs were not uncomfortable even when I was barefoot. In fact, at times when I simply rested my feet for a few minutes while working at the computer, they provided a very pleasant slight massage. With shoes, the grip also seemed excellent, and I did not feel that the foot could slip easily. Unlike a conventional balance cushion, this model consists of two independent hemispheres, offering much more freedom to vary exercises. Being able to place each support at different distances made a simple squat, plank, or one-leg balance require more control of movements than with a single disc.

I also tried varying the amount of air depending on the type of training. With less pressure, the hemispheres are more unstable and make you work more on balance; with more air, they offer a firmer base, which I especially appreciated when doing squats and lunges. Another detail I valued is everything that comes with the product. The pump worked perfectly. It was only a bit harder to empty them than to inflate them. The carrying bag was also useful for storing them together and carrying them comfortably from one room to another or even outside the house. Additionally, the exercises can be easily accessed via a QR code, so I did not have to search for routines online to start using them. I also did not notice any air pressure loss between sessions.

Its weak points: its two-piece design makes it not the best option for those looking for a balance cushion that can also be used as an active seat.

Quality: Amazon Basics

Which are the best balance cushions?
Amazon Basics balance cushion. EL PAÍS ESCAPARATE

Who is it for: for those looking for a good balance between features, comfort, and price.

Why we recommend it: it arrived with the necessary air pressure to start using it, although with the included pump, of great quality, I could inflate and deflate it to easily adjust the pressure I needed at each moment. The cushion itself also gave me very good feelings regarding quality and durability. Its PVC is not flimsy nor does it give the impression it will deform easily. Additionally, it offers very progressive and predictable instability. It never shifted abruptly, and I could normally do long exercises like planks. Training barefoot, the touch was pleasant, and with shoes, it maintained a secure grip even when the exercise required quickly changing support from one foot to the other.

I also found it useful as a chair cushion for the desk. At first, I thought I would barely notice differences, but after several days working at the computer, I found it forces small postural adjustments almost unconsciously, making the posture somewhat more dynamic. As with the Bozeera model, it maintained almost the same air pressure throughout the test period, so the only adjustments I made were to adapt firmness to the type of exercise I was going to do. A less positive aspect is that it was the model that attracted the most lint and dust, especially when used with socks. This is not a major problem because a damp cloth is enough to clean it, but it does require more maintenance than its rivals.

Its weak points: it does not come with an exercise guide or carrying bag.

Functional: Umbro

We test and rate the best balance cushions.
Umbro balance cushion. EL PAÍS ESCAPARATE

Who is it for: for those looking for a basic model for occasional training or rehabilitation exercises without spending too much.

Why we recommend it: starting to use it is not as immediate as with the Amazon Basics or Bozeera cushions. When taken out of the box, it has very little air and does not include an inflation pump. Since the valve is compatible with the needles of the other models, I solved it by using one of the pumps from another model. Once inflated, it delivers what it promises. It has a diameter of 33 centimeters, very comfortable for working balance, and allows performing common exercises like squats, one-leg support, or ankle and knee rehabilitation exercises with quite a bit of safety. The surface offered sufficient grip both barefoot and with sports shoes, and I never felt like slipping. My partner also tried it doing one-leg balance exercises and noticed the foot sank into the disc a bit more than expected, though without touching the floor. To avoid this, I preferred to keep it with a bit more air. However, if inflated too much, it tended to deform slightly on one side.

As a seat cushion while working at the computer, it performed adequately. It remained stable during use, and I did not notice any remarkable aspect. Its material also conveys a positive impression. The finish level is correct, and it recovers its shape after exercises. Additionally, it has an adequate weight to move it from one room to another or store it behind furniture when not in use. I also did not observe pressure loss during the days I used it, so it was not necessary to inflate it between sessions unless the exercises required it. Another detail I liked is that its surface barely accumulates dust or lint and cleans easily with a damp cloth, maintaining a good appearance after several sessions.

Its weak points: does not include an inflation pump.

Economical: Unycos

We have analyzed the best balance cushions.
Unycos balance cushion. EL PAÍS ESCAPARATE

Who is it for: for those looking for the most economical alternative.

Why we recommend it: the material is slightly less solid than the other models. Still, considering its price and tactile feel, the quality seemed more than acceptable. In fact, depending on the exercise, that lower rigidity was beneficial. For example, in mobility exercises or when used to work balance more relaxedly. Another plus is that it has a slightly larger diameter than some rivals and, at only 880 grams, is very light. Regarding grip, it was always correct, and the textured surface also fulfilled its function. Training barefoot, the touch is pleasant, and with shoes, it maintains enough adhesion to work safely. In simple balance or mobility exercises, it responds normally. However, when increasing training intensity or when my partner used it, we noticed it deformed a bit more than other cushions.

I had good feelings using it on the desk chair. Being a bit more flexible, the seat is comfortable for short periods. On the other hand, although the description indicates it includes an air pump, in my case, it was not in the box, so I had to use one from another model to inflate it. Also, it was the only one in the comparison where I noticed slight pressure loss between uses. It did not affect training, but I had to add some air between sessions. As an interesting detail, it is the model offering the most color options, with a total of 11 finishes.

Its weak points: pressure does not maintain as well over time, and the material conveys a less robust feeling than its rivals.

Frequently asked questions about balance cushions

What is a balance cushion?

This training accessory has an unstable surface that forces the body to activate muscles to maintain stability. It is usually made of durable materials like PVC and incorporates an air chamber whose inflation level can be adjusted to increase or decrease exercise difficulty.

What are its benefits?

Its main advantage is that it improves balance, coordination, and proprioception, that is, the body’s ability to perceive the position and movement of joints. By creating an unstable surface, it also activates the deep trunk muscles (core), helping to strengthen them, improve stability, and promote better posture. Additionally, it can be used both for training and to complement rehabilitation and injury prevention programs.

How to choose a balance cushion?

You should consider aspects such as diameter, maximum weight it supports, material resistance, and whether it allows adjusting the inflation level, as this influences stability and exercise difficulty. If it will be used for rehabilitation or as an active seat, a compact model is usually sufficient. However, for more intense or varied training, it is advisable to choose a more durable cushion with a non-slip surface.
