An avalanche in the Russian Caucasus kills at least 17 mountaineers

At least 17 people have died as a result of the avalanche that occurred last Sunday in the Bezengi Gorge, in the Caucasus region bordering Russia and Georgia, according to the latest official count.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian region of Kabardino-Balkaria has reported the location of a body, the seventeenth, which has been transported to Nalchik by helicopter. The avalanche caught 33 mountaineers, 10 of whom were able to descend on their own, some with injuries. Since then, a rescue operation has been launched to try to locate the missing.
