The State Attorney General, Isabel Peramato, appointed José Luis Garcia-Juanes this Wednesday as head of the largest provincial prosecutor’s office in Spain, that of Madrid, following the case for which his predecessor, Álvaro García Ortiz, was convicted. With this appointment, the renewal of the Madrid prosecutor’s office is completed, shaken by the process against the former Attorney General for the leak of data about Alberto González Amador, the partner of the President of the Community, Isabel Díaz-Ayuso.

Peramato has renewed the prosecutor’s office with people of her utmost trust. The Attorney General presided over the event and welcomed the representative of the public ministry who will lead the province with the highest volume of cases and also some of the most high-profile ones. In an emotional speech in which she recounted that García Juanes belongs to her same fiscal career promotion, Peramato highlighted García Juanes’ “deep loyalty to the Public Prosecutor’s Office” and that this is a “just recognition of his career.” She also emphasized that García-Juanes has developed his career by taking on “complex responsibilities,” actively participating in the organization of the Prosecutor’s Office and defending “the role of the institution, the protection of legality, citizens’ rights, and the public interest.”
The new provincial head of Madrid, 62 years old, has worked within this prosecutor’s office for 33 years. García Juanes succeeds Pilar Rodríguez, who now works at the Supreme Court, and who also played a key role in the case of the Attorney General. The new provincial head stated in his speech that his intention is to “commit to peace and tranquility by avoiding conflict” and affirmed that he understands the Public Ministry as “a service and not as a power structure.”
Three months ago, Peramato also replaced the previous senior prosecutor, Almudena Lastra, also implicated in the case and who directly pointed to Álvaro García Ortiz as responsible for the leak of the case against González Amador for tax fraud in her testimony. Although Lastra ran to renew her position, Peramato appointed Isabel Martín. Almudena Lastra is currently assigned to the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Community of Madrid.
García-Juanes holds a Law degree from the Complutense University of Madrid and in Geography and History, specializing in the History of Spain, from the UNED. He joined the fiscal career on October 13, 1989. Throughout his career, he has been assigned to different prosecutor’s offices, including those of Granada, Jaén, and Toledo, before joining the then Prosecutor’s Office of the High Court of Justice of Madrid in January 1993, with permanent assignment in Móstoles.
Subsequently, he developed much of his career in the Madrid Prosecutor’s Office, first in the Prosecutor’s Office of the High Court of Justice of Madrid and, after the split of the Superior and Provincial Prosecutor’s Offices, in the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office of Madrid. Between January 2009 and March 2012, he was assigned to the single service for notification of sentences to the Criminal Courts and for control and unification of appeals against them.
Since January 23, 2012, he served as senior prosecutor of the Third Section of the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office of Madrid. On June 14, 2024, he was appointed deputy prosecutor of the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office of Madrid, a position he held until his current appointment as the highest responsible of the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.
