Between February and March 2025, 57 patients at Ramón y Cajal Hospital were moved from the priority category to normal on the surgical waiting list, doubling the expected time for their operation: from 90 to 180 days. The changes, according to documents accessed by EL PAÍS, were made without the knowledge of the surgeons following those patients. Among those affected was a three-year-old girl with a complex pathology that could cause her to lose a leg.

The doctors provided screenshots from the computer system and emails in which their superiors acknowledged the modifications and linked them to the goal of operating on patients within 90 days. The Health Department and the hospital deny that the lists were manipulated and maintain that their management is based on clinical criteria. The case comes as Madrid’s surgical waiting list has already reached 120,168 patients.
