Once again, Mexico is featured in a MrBeast video. This weekend, the controversial American YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson, known as MrBeast, published a video on his YouTube channel in which he offered $250,000 (4.3 million pesos) to whoever could stay in a supermarket for the longest time and be the last to leave. In the end, the content creator raised the figure to one million dollars (more than 17 million pesos). According to Donaldson, the people inside the building had no idea this offer would happen. Among the participants is Juan, a Mexican man who has won the love of internet users and who, moreover, managed to be among the four finalists.

From YouTube to TikTok, people are rallying to support the Mexican. “Juan already won” is the most repeated phrase. What has made the Mexican the public’s favorite is, according to internet users, his kindness, his temperance, and the respect with which he addressed his companions during the three months he was competing against 33 people. “Chile present to support Juan”; “All of Latin America is with Juan”; “Peru supports Juan”; “I’m not Mexican, but I support Juan,” are some of the comments read across different internet platforms.

In the video, which is over 42 minutes long, MrBeast begins by explaining the rules through a supermarket microphone. Those who do not want to participate can fill their cart with everything they want and take it home for free. “Everything is already paid for,” says the influencer.
When Donaldson makes the announcement, there are 77 people inside, but 33 stay to compete. Juan starts the challenge with his son Ángel. “I think I’ll have to leave. I have work and school,” says the young man. Among the thirty, groups of three, four, and five people are formed.
After the second night, nine abandon. During the night of the fifth day, strategies begin to take effect. Xavian, one of the contestants who takes on a “villain” role, decides to destroy the sleeping bags of another tribe. He does it in secret, but is discovered by another man, which causes a series of brawls. The next morning, two more individuals give up.
These actions extend for more than 20 days; some annoying others to force their departure. For example, hitting dishes in the early morning, stealing utensils and blaming others for the crime, making a basketball disappear that the group entertained themselves with in the mornings, among others. Ángel, Juan’s son, withdraws after 15 days; Juan survives immune to provocations for 27, but on day 28, with eight participants remaining, Gunner, a young contestant, throws the pans and pots that the Mexican used for cooking through the door. “Don’t do that, friend,” Juan says annoyed and asks for respect. “I don’t respect you at all,” replies Gunner, who leaves five days after the altercation.

A month and a half later, with six people still inhabiting the supermarket, MrBeast incites someone else’s departure. In a shopping cart, he gathers $50,000 (more than 860,000 pesos) and one of the survivors, who had previously been nominated as the group leader, must decide how to distribute the money to whoever chooses to leave the contest at that moment. The leader decides: $30,000 to the next person to cross the door. One of them, whose name the show omits, takes the offer. “It’s the best day of my life,” he says as he crosses the parking lot, money in hand.
After 60 days, MrBeast returns and adds another challenge. Whoever scores a penalty kick wins a pass to see a World Cup match, which starts on June 11, 2026. At this point, there are four individuals remaining. Only one misses the shot. The tickets they are given have no information about the day, venue, or match they will attend. The World Cup is held in three different countries: Mexico, Canada, and the United States.
The last four individuals celebrate Juan’s birthday on day 64. They make him a cake, sing him “Las Mañanitas,” improvise a piñata, and also play pin the tail on the donkey. “I love you, guys,” says the birthday boy. “We love you too, Juan.” A small moment of joy before Donaldson reformulates the challenge.
The content creator says that if the contestants let the supermarket be restocked and they finish all the food, they could win a million dollars. “We are going to build showers, bathrooms, beds, a gym, and we will assign them a nutritionist and a personal trainer.” The finalists accept and, according to the influencer, the content will be published next year.
Donaldson’s adjustment is ambiguous. It is also not clear what will happen with the World Cup passes or if the contestants will leave the supermarket during the time it takes to adapt the facilities. There is nothing left but to wait.
