Morante spends the night in the ICU with a rectal perforation of uncertain evolution

Bullfighter Morante de la Puebla has spent the night hospitalized in the ICU of the Sevillian hospital Viamed after being gored by the fourth bull yesterday afternoon, in the Maestranza de Sevilla, when he was at a particularly brilliant moment in his career. The prognosis was very serious.

“It was a goring, more than of immediate severity, it had complex injuries. It is the anal area, of the rectum. It was necessary to repair the sphincters, which makes the intervention a more complex than immediate surgery,” explained surgeon Octavio Mulet to the specialized media Mundotoro.

The public already suspected that the goring would be serious, due to the bullfighter’s gestures of pain on the sand. “He came in in pain, but stable. It must be taken into account that in that area, the pain is very significant,” explained the surgeon.

The medical report, made public yesterday, stated: “Gore wound by bull horn in the posterior anal margin with a trajectory of about 10 cm, partially injuring the anal sphincter musculature and with a perforation in the posterior wall of the rectum of 1.5 cm. Wound lavage, and repair of the rectal wall and sphincter apparatus. Suction drainage in the post-anal and retro-rectal space.”

According to Mulet, Morante has also been examined in the lumbar area, but no back injury has been found, pending radiological tests. The most delicate aspect in this situation is the possibility of infections. “These types of incidents are complicated. We have to wait about 10 days to see how the wound recovers before giving deadlines,” Mulet told Mundotoro.

More serious than it seemed

Morante had cut an ear from his first bull, when, trying to stop the fourth bull, a bull from Hermanos García Jiménez named Clandestino, cape in hand, he was forcefully run over by it and thrown onto the sand. The bull weighed 512 kilos. Once there, it trampled his lower back. The bullfighter put his left hand to his glute, although no blood was visible, only a hole in his suit of lights at the height of his left thigh. Once in the infirmary, the aforementioned report revealed that it was a goring more serious than it seemed.

In recent times, the bullfighter had been gaining great popular fervor among fans. The Sevillian bullfighter had reappeared with enormous success on Easter Sunday in Seville, the start of the April Fair, after his frustrated retirement on October 12 in Las Ventas. The bullfighter was in good spirits and had signed a good number of bullfights for this season. Now his professional future is uncertain.
