In a new chapter of The Colombia We Want, Diana Calderón speaks with journalist Marta Ruiz Naranjo, who throughout her career has dedicated herself to covering the armed conflict in the country, which has earned her multiple awards. After the Peace Agreement with the defunct Farc guerrilla, she was called to be part of the Truth Commission, and was in charge of writing the chapter ‘Thou Shalt Not Kill’. According to her, there she encountered a reality more complex and painful than she imagined. From the Medellín of her childhood, where drug trafficking emerged with great force, Ruiz talks about the structural changes proposed by the Petro Government and how, to achieve reconciliation, an agreement must be reached with a sector of the elites. Despite having portrayed the war, she maintains an optimistic outlook: “Colombia’s process in the last hundred years is forward-looking…And we have advanced.”
