An AI-trained robot defeats an elite table tennis player

Sports are proving very useful for training robots that operate using artificial intelligence. This is the case of this mechanical arm called Ace, developed by Sony AI, which faces off against a professional ping-pong player, as can be seen in this video published by the scientific journal Nature. Table tennis is particularly challenging for this type of technological system because it requires a very fast response, an extremely precise prediction of the ball’s trajectory, and minimizing latency ―the delay in processing information― as much as possible. Ace’s creators suggest that the results of this experiment can be used in other facets and surpass humans in complex tasks beyond sports.
