Eight mobile phones, more than 150 pills and almost half a kilo of drugs, this is everything that Valdemoro prison (Madrid) officials have seized in one week. The Independent and Civil Servants Trade Union (CSIF) has made this information public to highlight the trafficking that exists within prisons and the work carried out by its workers to ensure that regulations are complied with. The union wanted to provide this data to ask for more measures to combat the trafficking of prohibited substances and objects in penitentiary centers.

The union highlighted these seizures in a statement in which it points out that these seized objects “once again demonstrate the involvement, professionalism and commitment of the staff”, who with their effort contribute to “guaranteeing security” in the Valdemoro penitentiary center. In addition, CSIF has taken advantage of the collection of prohibited objects to reiterate once again its demands, which include increasing staff to intensify searches, pat-downs and security controls; improving technological means to detect mobile phones or other prohibited objects; and measures against new threats.
“From CSIF we emphasize that the true importance of these interventions lies in preventing the entry and distribution of prohibited substances within prison, so that drug consumption among inmates is reduced and, in this way, incidents are prevented from multiplying,” the union stresses.

The statement also warns of the “growing use of drones” for the introduction of drugs and mobile devices into penitentiary centers, and has warned that, currently, “there are not enough means” for their detection or neutralization, which represents a “serious health risk”.
