Work calendar: in which communities is there a long weekend due to the holiday on May 1st, Labor Day?

After the Easter break, we all asked the same question: when will the next holiday be? For the inhabitants of Aragón and Castilla y León, the date was April 23 (day of both communities). The rest of Spain had to wait until this Friday, May 1: International Workers’ Day, which is a national holiday.

The fact that it falls on a Friday automatically creates a three-day national long weekend, mandatory and non-substitutable in all autonomous communities.

In the special case of the Community of Madrid, where the regional holiday is Saturday, May 2, Madrilenians will have the same three-day break as the rest of the national territory, unlike last year when a four-day long weekend was formed because the community holiday fell on a Friday.

Other localities combine local holidays with the national holiday, achieving extra-long weekends of up to 5 consecutive days.

Why is May 1 celebrated?

Beyond the rest, these days have a deep historical significance. May 1 commemorates the 1886 demands in Chicago for the eight-hour workday. In Spain, after being suspended in 1936 and transformed under the patronage of Saint Joseph the Worker in 1955, the holiday was restored with its original character in 1978.
