Is Juan Manuel Moreno the one who performs the song of his campaign?

Thursday, April 30. Kick-off campaign rally for the PP candidate for re-election as president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juan Manuel Moreno. Topics from various Spanish groups — very current — follow one another, mixed with some from Camilo, when the music is interrupted to give way to a very catchy song with a 90s pop rhythm, but that no one had heard until that moment… although not everything sounded unfamiliar. “Is the president singing?” the journalists covering the event began to ask.

The campaign team quickly informed that it was a track called Kilómetro sur performed by a group of “Sevillian kids” with the same name, but they did not reveal the mystery of who the singer was. A day later, in Córdoba, when Moreno was asked if he was the one singing, he left it open: “It sounds similar, it really sounds quite similar, but we’ll see…”.

Kilómetro sur has become the anthem of the PP campaign. It plays every time Moreno makes his entrance at a meeting or in the venue where a rally is to be held. The lyrics stick: “It’s Andalucía, a land and the world, the southern kilometer, where being Andalusian is a deep pride,” says one of the other choruses.

Early Wednesday morning, Moreno shared his campaign playlist on his social networks. The first of all, Kilómetro sur. By mid-afternoon, the president announced the music video of the song through the same channels, “a tribute to Andalucía that comes from our heart,” says the popular leader, who accompanies the post with part of the song’s lyrics: “Andalucía is a giant walking forward. There is no better noise than the revolution of its people.”

The video is a succession of perfectly recognizable images of Andalucía: the Triana bridge in Seville, the mosque of Córdoba, the hermitage of El Rocío… interspersed with young people on the beach; middle-aged people playing guitar and dancing; retired women singing and clapping; field and sea workers; children playing sports; businesses opening their shutters; flags of Andalucía; images of Andalusians demonstrating for autonomy… It would seem like a promotional video from the Junta of February 28, if it weren’t for the fact that scenes from the first days of Moreno’s campaign and the “Sevillian kids” who perform the song also appear.

The young people, three boys and a girl, appear playing and one of them does the backing vocals. None of them is seen singing the song. The campaign team confirmed to Efe that Moreno was the one singing, but they officially keep the mystery. And the bets that we will see the president performing the song at some campaign event, reminiscing about his youth when he was the vocalist of several bands, are gaining ground. In 2018 he already took the mic again at an event prior to the regional campaign in his hometown of Alhaurín el Grande.

“This song sounds good, right? It seems like there’s a good band there,” the president hinted at the start of his rally in Torremolinos, which began precisely with the video of the song.
