Welsh pop singer Bonnie Tyler, recognizable by her raspy voice and huge blue eyes, is recovering in a hospital after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery in Faro, southern Portugal, where she has a residence, according to a statement on the artist’s website published on Wednesday. Tyler, 74, is famous for ballads such as It’s a Heartache, her first big hit, from 1977; Total Eclipse of the Heart, in 1983 and, in a different style, Holding Out for a Hero, from 1984 which was part of the soundtrack of the movie Footloose. The statement adds that the operation “was a success.”

“We know that all her family, friends, and followers will be concerned by this news and wish her a speedy and full recovery,” the note adds.
Tyler, whose birth name is Gaynor Hopkins, remains the only Welsh artist to have reached number one on the UK singles chart. The artist was scheduled to perform at a music festival in Malta on May 22 and later in Germany on May 30. For now, it has not been reported whether she will keep those dates.

The artist represented the United Kingdom at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest.
