The aftermath of the controversial and turbulent visit of the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, to Mexico continues to fuel Mexican politics. The president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has invited the Spanish right-wing leader to spend more time in her country, after she had to cancel her tour due to alleged “threats” and criticism of her view of the Conquest and the recognition of the conqueror Hernán Cortés. “She would learn a lot,” said the president, who assures that the few days Díaz Ayuso spent in Mexican territory served to open the debate about the history of Cortés in Spain.

Sheinbaum has pointed out that Ayuso has not been well received upon her return to Spain, where she has been questioned in the Madrid Assembly for taking 10 days for her tour and for trying to “humiliate Mexicans” with her unfortunate comments. “Mexico did not exist until the Spaniards arrived,” the President of the Community of Madrid said in the plenary session, in addition to calling the Mexican president one of the “narco-friends” of the Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, and leading a country with serious security problems in which she herself suffered “serious threats” before interrupting her trip. “She hates Mexico and the Mexican government so much, but she spent 10 days on vacation. Let her come more, let her spend more vacation time here. We are an extraordinary country. Let her learn more about Mexican culture, live as the people live. I think she would learn a lot about the cultural greatness of Mexico,” Sheinbaum said provocatively in her morning press conference.
She also did not miss the opportunity to point out that, after canceling her tour of the country, there were three days when she was in an unknown location. This same absence has been questioned in the Madrid Assembly, where she has been accused of taking a vacation while Ayuso insists that Sánchez had “abandoned” her in “an extreme danger situation” in Mexico amid alleged attacks from Sheinbaum during the presidential press conferences. “My government should have said: ‘This lady is a representative of the State, lower the tone’,” Ayuso repeated.

Mexican journalists have asked the president about the statements of some Spanish politicians, such as Manuela Bergerot, spokesperson for Más Madrid, who defended Mexico against Ayuso’s statements, or the PSOE spokesperson, Mar Espinar, who called her tour shameful and thanked Mexico for its solidarity with the refugees of the Civil War. “There is freedom of expression and the debate is already happening. It helped a lot that she came because it opened the debate. It allowed us to talk about Hernán Cortés, about what the conquest and invasion were, about the peoples, about the cultural greatness of Mexico, about the dignity of the Mexican people,” Sheinbaum triumphantly concluded.
