Another day of violence in Mexico. This time the scene has been the small central State of Morelos. In the early hours of this Sunday, an armed confrontation in an illegal bar in Anenecuilco (11,200 inhabitants, about 40 kilometers south of Cuernavaca) has left a toll of eight people dead, as confirmed by the regional Government in a statement. The Morelos Executive has not clarified the origin of the shooting. Nor is there any trace of the attackers or clues as to whether the attack responds to a struggle between the cartels that have terrorized the region for years.

The attack occurred around 4:30 AM (12:30 PM peninsular time) at the bar El Rincón de la Banda. It was the neighbors who raised the alarm. They recognized the roar at the first shot: in Morelos, the sound is unmistakable in large areas of the State. The military and the National Guard arrived at the scene. But those responsible were no longer there. Only the bodies of seven men and one woman, still unidentified. “It will be the competent authorities, based on ongoing investigations, who will precisely determine how the events occurred and the corresponding responsibilities,” the Morelos Government merely stated.

Morelos, one of the smallest territories in the country with just under two million inhabitants, has consistently ranked as one of the regions with the highest violence. In March, the State, along with Guanajuato, Chihuahua, Baja California, Guerrero, State of Mexico, and Oaxaca, accounted for 50% of the deaths recorded that month. It has also been the scene of a profound femicidal crisis. In early March, the sexist murder of two students from the Autonomous University of Morelos (UAEM) in the same week sparked outrage throughout Mexico.
