An 83-year-old man drowns while bathing on a beach in Roses

An 83-year-old French man drowned this Monday at Platja Nova de Roses (Girona), raising to 18 the number of people who have died on Catalan beaches since the start of the bathing season on June 15. The figure rises to 30 if those who have died in pools and inland waters are included. Civil Protection has been calling for caution for days due to the increased number of drowned bathers compared to last summer.

According to sources from the Generalitat’s Civil Protection, the emergency phone 112 received a call at 11:15 a.m. reporting that a person was unconscious in the water and that lifeguards had pulled him out and taken him to the sand to try to revive him.

Four units from the Medical Emergency System (SEM) went to the scene but were unable to save his life.

The Mossos d’Esquadra activated three units, and Maritime Rescue and the Local Police were also alerted. At the time of the incident, there was surveillance service and a green flag on this beach.
