An inmate of the Tarragona prison convicted of murder escapes during a scheduled outing

The Mossos d’Esquadra are searching for a prisoner who escaped this Thursday while on a scheduled outing from the Mas d’Enric prison in Tarragona. The man, 52 years old, is still serving a sentence for a murder case and had previously participated in other activities of this type that facilitate reintegration, according to Diari de Tarragona. Sources familiar with the matter explain that the inmate took advantage of a moment when the group entered a restaurant in the Les Gavarres shopping center with his companions to escape through the emergency exit.

The escape occurred around two in the afternoon, when the group was about to eat. He was accompanied by the educators in charge of the outing and four other prisoners. He asked to go to the bathroom and did not return with his companions.

Sources from the Department of Justice have acknowledged the escape and defended that it was not the first activity of this type in which he participated, so initially it was not considered a risky situation. After three hours of active but unsuccessful search by Mossos d’Esquadra agents in the area, the case was taken over by investigators from the police force.

Scheduled outings are one of the ways that allow reintegration after prison, and only prisoners who show good behavior and have served a quarter of their prison sentence can benefit. The prison treatment board and the center’s management must approve the inclusion of these measures, which unlike individualized outings are always carried out with accompaniment. The maximum number of participants is five inmates.
