Arrested in Argentina Fernando Farías Laguna, one of the ringleaders of the Navy's huachicol network

The Mexican Navy Rear Admiral Fernando Farías Laguna has been arrested in Argentina. The federal Security Secretary, Omar García Harfuch, confirmed his capture on social media this Thursday. Farías Laguna, who was a fugitive from justice, is identified as one of the ringleaders —along with his brother Manuel Roberto— of the Navy’s fiscal ‘huachicol’ network, one of the largest corruption schemes uncovered in recent years.

The arrest, which occurred in Buenos Aires, marks the end of a search that began in late 2025, when Farías Laguna failed to appear before the judge. Shortly after, it was assumed that he had fled justice, and a red notice was activated in 192 countries. The Government stated in a communiqué that the naval officer flew to Florida (USA) in August 2024 and never returned. In fact, the Executive has affirmed that the capture was achieved after “months of coordinated work” with Argentina and the United States.

The Mexican Attorney General’s Office accuses Farías Laguna of “organized crime with the purpose of committing hydrocarbon-related offenses.” The two brothers are nephews of the Secretary of the Navy during the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), Rafael Ojeda Durán. They are also the highest-ranking profiles within the structure of the Armed Forces who have fallen from grace, tainted by corruption.

The fiscal ‘huachicol’ scandal also completely buried the official narrative that the military was incorruptible. It was under that umbrella that López Obrador decided to open the door wide for them to manage large infrastructure projects and, in this case, customs operations.
