TJ McGovern, from the Orange County Fire Department in California, has said that the threat of a chemical tank explosion “has been eliminated” after containing an “explosive vapor outbreak.” This comes after California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency over the risk this weekend.

McGovern explained that the crack in the tank helped dissipate the pressure and that the firefighters’ work helped stabilize the tank’s temperature. At the time of the press conference, it had been reduced from 37.7 to 33.8 degrees. On the other hand, Craig Covey, incident commander of the Orange County Fire Authority, asked that evacuation zones be respected. 40,000 residents from six cities have been evacuated.
