The figures are so disproportionate that they inevitably lead to alarm, panic, and fear: the streets, hills, and beaches of Ceuta filled with black and Moorish people without homes, clothes, food, or shoes and, of course, wandering aimlessly. Nothing happens: they brought it on themselves. They should have stayed in their homes, or returned to them, as 90% of those who entered on July 30 and 31 did, and the party would be over.

As Jacobo Bergareche explains very well in a forthcoming book, Tío grande, we have internalized fearful apprehension against blackness spontaneously, yes, but also culturally induced. About 1,500 children — almost all leaning towards dark-skinned — remain in Ceuta from those who ventured to cross the border to flee Morocco, their families, and their environment, aspiring to reach the white zone.
Of them, around 700 girls are willing never to return to the aberrant conditions of upbringing and socialization in their own country. In plainer words, that means they do not want what our daughters, sisters, nieces, or granddaughters do not want: to be married off to men they do not know who are twice or thrice their age, nor do they want to continue being slaves to their fathers, brothers, husbands, or grandfathers. It is not a bad idea, and Spain as a country and as a State should be fully and unreservedly committed to the cause of finding them placement, refuge, and a future: literally and without hesitation. They are brave girls who have faced everything (including their mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and needless to say, the male sector as well) and have had the courage to embark on the route (preferably without return) to a political space that has understood that the sexual and economic exploitation of women is an abominable aberration.
The PP does not seem to see it exactly that way. It sees the tumultuous blackness before the woman or man as individuals fleeing, and it does so openly to its own and others’ great shame. The message sent to the girls (and of course the boys) is to leave as soon as possible and quickly. No assumption that their flight is a heartbreaking and bold step, justified and highly reasonable. It exactly matches the cause of the EU rule of law. They have done well to leave in a hurry and with nothing, at their own risk (there are currently 16 victims of sexual assault) and total fear of not knowing what will become of them. That, welcoming them, counting them, clothing them, cleaning them, is exactly what the Christian humanism of the conservative EU dictates to do in an unforeseen situation, such as the massive arrival of people and entire families (the vast majority already returned, perhaps because they were deceived by venomously directed social media).
However, the PP is politically tied to the conditions of Vox — to which it has given the ministries in charge in several autonomous communities — and at the same time tied to the strategy of destroying Sánchez’s Government, with Aznar reborn and toasted visiting Ceuta. The result is the active and explicit defense of racist postulates that the PP consents to or even militates in. Rejecting the autonomous distribution of immigrants directly and fundamentally violates Spanish legislation itself, without any judge so far seeing anything improper in that conduct by the PP communities. It’s bad luck: how nice it would be if the rule of law forced right-wing communities to comply with the legislation and welcome, protect, socialize, and educate newcomers, whether Vox likes it or not.
The racist, xenophobic, and inhuman blackmail that the PP accepts from Vox will come back as a boomerang when the polls open and the civil decency of the majority of Spaniards decides that that tactical opportunism and vile consent to the far right should not be in charge of the State. The media noise today is theirs, certainly, but so is the shamelessness of politically instrumentalizing those boys and girls. Wearing down the Government is the duty of an opposition party; relentlessly violating the civilizational standard and accepting the racist contagion of the far right is far from fitting among the duties of the opposition. But this theoretically center-right opposition openly consents to the racism of the far right. It is not a good idea in democratic terms but it is not even good for a sector of its voters, not yet abducted by the emotional rhetoric of racial supremacy. Could any bishop or something similar reproach the deeply anti-Christian policy of the PP allied with Vox, for God’s sake (never better said)?
