The family life of singer Cher (El Centro, California, 79 years old) has never been easy. But in recent years, it seems to have become more complicated, especially due to the situation of her youngest son, Elijah Blue, born in 1976 during her brief marriage to Gregg Allman, keyboardist and singer. The artist has now requested custody of Elijah, 49 years old and currently admitted to a psychiatric center due to his mental health problems and after committing several crimes. She claims that he is not capable of using the financial resources at his disposal, $120,000 annually left to him by his father. This is not the first time this has happened, as Cher already requested guardianship of Elijah at the end of 2023.

It was the magazine People that obtained the court documents of this request, which the singer filed earlier this week in the Superior Court of Los Angeles, California. According to the artist, Elijah Blue Allman’s health “has significantly deteriorated” since that request two and a half years ago, after which both reached a private agreement to improve the man’s situation. In fact, a few months later, last summer 2025, Allman suffered an overdose and has recently gone through several police arrests.
The documentation states that Allman is currently in custody in the state of New Hampshire, on the other side of the country, and that he is “admitted to a secure psychiatric hospital.” “In order to regain the capacity to respond to the criminal charges against him in two cases, in two counties of New Hampshire, for aggravated trespassing, property damage, simple assault, trespassing on private property, and bail violation,” the petition reads, which also states that “this is just the set of current problems.”
In recent weeks, Elijah Blue Allman has faced legal setbacks. On February 27, Allman was arrested in Concord, a city in New Hampshire, for causing disturbances at a high school. And just a couple of days later, on Sunday, March 1, he was arrested again in Windham, in the same state, for forcibly entering a property and was taken to the police station, where he spent the night, and charged with theft.

According to Cher, her youngest son’s addiction and mental health problems mean he does not have “the capacity to understand the concept of money” and make him a person “unable to manage his financial resources and to face fraud or bad influences,” she explains, stating that he spends all the money he has at his disposal “immediately,” and almost always on “drugs, expensive hotels, and limousines.” “He immediately wastes every dollar he receives from the fund established by his father, his only source of income, without considering his obligations or well-being,” the lawsuit asserts,
According to Cher and her lawyers, there is a pattern on Allman’s part: as soon as he receives that money, he goes to a luxury hotel, often the exclusive Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, and buys and consumes drugs incessantly and cyclically, until he spends it all and “ends up in the hospital or with an overdose.” Additionally, he leaves “thousands of dollars in damages” at these establishments, such as cigarette burns “or broken windows and walls.” Apparently, he has been expelled from about twenty of them. He has also had abusive behavior towards hotel staff, and on one occasion, the lawsuit reads, he aggressively pushed a young waitress to have sexual relations with him.

In fact, among his debts, he also owes $50,000 to an Airbnb accommodation for the damages he caused there. And his debts are not only for hotel nights: according to the lawsuit, he owes $18,000 to a drug dealer and more than $200,000 in taxes.

Allman is divorced from Marieangela King, whom according to court documents he has not paid alimony; in fact, he has not even appeared in court for the case. In September 2023, when they were in the middle of the separation process, King accused Cher of having kidnapped her son from a New York hotel by hiring four men to forcibly remove him from the establishment and put him in a rehabilitation clinic, in an episode that would have taken place almost a year earlier, in November 2022.
Cher’s youngest son has struggled with addiction problems throughout his life. At just 11 years old, he began using drugs such as ecstasy and marijuana. He has been through rehabilitation centers many times. Family problems have also been constant, and mother and son have spent years without speaking. In fact, the Believe singer did not attend her son’s wedding to King in 2013.
However, Cher is now trying to help Allman. As she said in an interview in October 2024, for her, that is her role: “You do anything for your children. Whenever you can help them, do it because that is being a mother. But it is joy, even with pain; above all, when you think of your children, you just smile, love them, and try to be there for them.”
