The celebrations for the Independence Cry in the capital’s Zócalo will feature the free presence of the group Intocable on September 15. In addition to the artistic offer, the event commemorates the historic call for insurrection made by the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in 1810. President Claudia Sheinbaum has made the announcement through a video shared on social media where she appears walking in the National Palace listening to the song ¿Y todo para qué?
Schedules and programming for the patriotic festivities
The program will start around 9:00 p.m. The stage will host various casts, such as the National Guard mariachi, the Mexican Navy group, and the mariachi of the Secretariat of National Defense. The lineup also includes the participation of José Alfredo Jiménez Medel – grandson of the famous Mexican composer -, the group Legado de Grandeza, and the winners of the México Canta contest.
Intocable will take the stage around 9:45 p.m. They are expected to perform key songs from their repertoire, such as Fuerte no soy, Enséñame a olvidarte or El amigo que se fue. The Independence Cry will take place at 11:00 p.m.
Road closures and circulation alternatives
Due to the event, traffic restrictions are expected in the vicinity of the Historic Center. The road closures will affect the following streets:
- Calle 20 de Noviembre
- Calle 5 de Febrero
- Pino Suárez
- Calle de Moneda
- República de Brasil
It is suggested to use alternative routes such as Eje Central Lázaro Cárdenas, Avenida Cuauhtémoc, Eje 3 Oriente, Circuito Interior, and Anillo Periférico.
From Texas to the monumental stage of the capital
Founded in the 1990s in Zapata, Texas, by Ricardo “Ricky” Muñoz and René Martínez, the norteño-tejano band has quickly positioned itself in sales and popularity charts. In 1999, the group suffered a tragic vehicle accident on a highway in Nuevo León in which several of its members lost their lives. After the incident, they dedicated the piece El amigo que se fue in memory of their companions.
This summer, Intocable has achieved the highest number of diamond certifications for a Latin group under the Latin program of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and has unveiled its star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The performance in Mexico City’s Zócalo will add the group to the list of international performers who have appeared in the public square.
The Zócalo holds records of large attendance led by Shakira (whose concert drew about 400,000 people), Los Fabulosos Cadillacs (300,000 attendees), and Grupo Firme (280,000 people). It is considered the second largest public square in the world only after Tiananmen in Beijing, and the largest in Spanish-speaking countries.
